I flushed at the memory of Chicago and number sixty-seven coming up behind me. Instinctually, I swiped at my shoulders as the memory relayed itself. It was like I could feel him over my shoulder all over again.

“I saw what happened.” His eyes were stern as mine seemed to widen with his words. “I watched the game footage and as everyone else watched the play, I watched you.”

“Number sixty-seven,” I confirmed. “Leaned over my shoulder like he was asking me something about the game and called me a cunt. I don't take too much offense to that word but if he was trying to get under my skin, it worked.”

“Keep going,” he urged, clearly wanting the whole picture, including the part he could see from the video.

I sighed because I knew I was going to just tell him. I had nothing to lose anyway, he had already seen me in tears over it–my weakest moment. “He kept on like that the entire game, under the guise of talking about the game of course. He didn’t fucking play, so he never left. And toward the end of the game, when he realized his words weren’t cutting deep enough, he used his jacket to hide his hands and took a finger to the back of my ass.”

Levi shoved to his feet and paced down the length of the rooftop, then back. When he made his way back in front of me, he leaned down and put his face in front of mine. “Keep going.”

“There isn't much more to tell. I felt violated and hurt, emotional. My first season with my dream job and I get treated like that? Honestly, coming from you after a play isn't actually bad, it doesn't bother me at all. I expect that to be the case. But a random player that has no business even talking to me, much less touching me?” I shuddered again as Levi knelt down in front of me. “I want to be respected, and two games into the regular season I was sexually assaulted in front of millions of people.”

“Why didn't you say something? Why didn't you at least tellmeafter the game?”

“What would you do or care? I knew why you were there, and I was okay with it. If anyone else saw it, it would be all over the news, so when it wasn't, I just let it go. I need to work on being someone before I can start whining.”

Levi leaned in closer and took his hand to the side of my face. Gently, he took a few hairs that had fallen in my face and tucked them behind my ear. “Baby girl, I would have cared. I do care. I may give you a hard time on that field, but I do not condone anyone getting away with what he is getting away with.”

“That is big, considering you have threatened me with your cock laid against me.”

“I’m different, and you know damn well I am. I’ve never touched you on that field, in front of millions of people and I have never touched you without your consent.”

I was starting to tear up at the truth behind his words. Every time his hands have been on me, even when we were fighting, I wanted it more than I wanted my next breath. That was the pull that started in New York and continued the moment I was in his world again.

I nodded at him, assuring him I agreed with what he said, then bit back the emotions. I had my own questions, and since he got one in, it was my turn to ask.

Chapter28

Levi

Ihad resettled on the bench next to Charleigh and bowed my head. I knew number sixty-seven touched her, I could see her jump in the video, but I wasn't sure how until she told me.

“I have a question, too. Remember?

I turned my head to look at her and nodded, telling her to go on with her question.

“Are you and Mr. Elder playing me right now? Is this all a ruse to get me to quit?”

Oh fuck, if she only knew. Quitting is what I wanted her to do, Richard wanted more than that from her.

“I’m not playing you right now,” I said honestly. “I wanted a calm and honest night with you. I wanted to spend time with you outside of the ring and off the field. That's it.”

“I just don't know what to believe.”

“Yeah, you do,” I sat up straight and leaned against the bench. I crossed my ankle over my knee and tried to look sure of myself. “You wouldn't be here if you thought I was playing you.”

“Yeah, I would.” Her answer was quick and matter of fact. “I don't feel like I have control of myself around you. My body is not strong enough to back away from you even if you are using it to destroy me.”

That was my chance to push her away and tell her she had to go. That I needed her off that field and off all the other fields. I could lie to her and tell her I would tell the world about us and destroy her reputation and career before it ever got started. Then she could back away on her own terms, and I would win both battles.

Instead, I pulled her from the bench and sat her in my lap. Her left arm wrapped around my shoulders, and I leaned back so we could both see the buildings across the park. I pointed at a tall building and her gaze traveled down my arm and into the distance.

“See that building right there? The one with the three flashing red lights?”

“Yeah,” she said softly.

“I own the top floor. That is where I live. And I wanted to take you back there and recreate our night in New York. I want to push you against my huge windows and crack the door to the balcony a little so that I can show my neighbors in the other buildings who you belong to. Your tits pressed against the cold glass, you screaming my name so loud they can hear you through the small crack. I want you to call me Levi, not Brett, because when you say my real name, I know that you know exactly who is fucking you.”
