Page 47 of The Way We Fight

Her eyes were still staring at the building even though my hand had lowered to her thigh. I let my thumb graze over her jean clad pussy a few times, just enough to tease her as I spoke to her like I did at the bar in New York.

“You want that, Charleigh? It’s what we do best, isn't it? Fight and fuck? One more time, baby girl. Let’s go see how high you can lift those legs, how hard you can get my dick, and how many times I can make you come.”

Picking her up, I stood and turned her around, then set her on her feet. Grabbing her face, I leaned down and kissed her, then looked into her eyes while I waited for her to tell me to take her home with me. That wasn't my plan at all, but at that point, I was sure she thought it was always part of why I brought her there.

After what she just told me, I couldn't help myself. Just a few words about how much her body wanted me was enough to make me oblige. I was helpless, and on top of my need for her, I wanted her to stop questioning me.

“Why not just start with that?” She asked. “Why tell me you wanted a quiet and honest night with me?”

“I’m not planning any of this, baby. Just going with what feels right.”

Her hands started caressing up my chest until her hands were around my neck. “That is all I have ever done when it comes to you. Whatever feels right. Throwing that flag in your face a few weeks ago felt right. Fucking you in my locker room felt right. Being here tonight feels right. But it's dangerous, not only to my sanity but to my job, livelihood, and heart.”

I flinched at her saying I was dangerous to her heart. I didn’t want her heart, nor did I want to be a risk to it. And I sure as fuck didn’t want her to be anywhere near my own heart. But I would be lying if I said mine didn't stutter a little at her words.

“Let’s go, Coach. Let’s go spend time together the way we do it best.”

A growl rose up inside of me and I kissed her as it escaped my lips. She let out another one of her small giggles that I had become addicted to and wrapped her arms around my shoulders. Our kiss lasted a few minutes, basking in the feeling and taste of each other, reminding me of when I was younger and the act of kissing was enough to turn me on.

Now, not only was it turning me on, but it was also satisfying me in a way it never had before. Like I could finish the night with nothing more than that kiss and still be happy and content.

When the kiss ended, we quickly gathered the food into the bag and finished our wine before heading out across the park once again, that time in the direction of my building.

Our hands were laced and our smiles were almost puckish. We both took sweet and subtle glances at each other as we made our way through the dark park. I had the bag of food on my shoulder, knowing without a doubt we would need sustenance after a while and my apartment was bare since Rhys had left.

It was late, but not past midnight and for a Friday night in Atlanta, some still considered the time early. Plenty of people were roaming the sidewalks so I kept my head tilted down, as did Charleigh. Neither of us wanted to be recognized and chose to be safe rather than sorry.

Once we made it into the lobby of my building, I felt even more uneasy since more people there knew who I was and may recognize Charleigh as my date. Luckily, the lobby was empty, so I strode quickly toward the elevator bank and pressed the up button. My penthouse required a key for the elevator, so I dug into my wallet while we waited for it to come down and open.

I kissed Charleigh’s temple on instinct, just needing the contact. I was just about to wrap my arm around her when the door to the elevator opened and the couple about to exit was none other than Tyson Black and his girlfriend, Giselle Metrovik.

They were kissing, and so far into one another that they didn't see me yet, but I knew they would. So, without thinking it through, I shoved Charleigh quickly, making her fall between the two large, imitation bushes that sat along the elevator.

“Coach!” I heard Ty say happily. Then he looked toward the bushes, realizing I had just been looking at them. Charleigh couldn't be seen, so he asked, “Like the greenery, Coach?”

“Um, what?” I asked, worried I had hurt Charleigh and not paying enough attention to what he had said. When it registered, though, I nodded, “Weird that it’s here in the building like that. But I just realized it was fake. Giselle, how are you?”

Giselle nodded and let me change the subject. “Good, Mr. Peyton. Just taking it day by day.”

She had been through hell in the past few weeks, and I was so thankful Ty and her found their way back to one another. Her leg had been shot but she was already walking again–gingerly.

“Where are you two headed so late?” I was clearly nervous, just wanting them to leave, but also knowing I was throwing red flags right and left by being so jittery.

“Ice cream,” Ty smiled. “Trying to convince Miss Priss here to live a little, and she needed a short walk on the leg. Coach? Is that a purse?” Ty motioned to my cooler that sat on my shoulder, much like a woman wore her purse.

“Uh, no it's…” I couldn't tell him it was a picnic cooler. I would fall right out of my hard core, tough reputation and into a laughingstock quicker than I could say ‘good game.’ I patted the bag a few times, trying to decide what to say before genius hit me. “It’s my gym bag.”

Ty nodded with his lip jutted up and I knew without a doubt he didn't believe me. He had seen my gym bag a thousand times. It had the Jets’ logo on the side of it and looked more like a bag used for the gym. This cooler looked almost dainty.

Fuck.

“Hope you had a good workout, Mr. Peyton.” Giselle smiled and winked at me gracefully, and I nodded a silent thank you. She may not have realized I just shoved the new NFL referee into the fake bushes, but she knew I needed to be spared the scrutiny of Ty’s hard stare.

“Sure did. See you tomorrow, Ty, flight leaves at 2pm.”

“Aye, aye, Coach.” He gave me a salute but stayed put for a few more seconds.

My phone chimed and I grabbed it, seeing a text from Charleigh on the screen.
