“We already know that if I insisted, then you would open your legs for me, baby.” Okay, so I had to throw that in for the sake of being us.

She huffed a small laugh and shook her head in annoyance.

“Really, Charleigh. Please hang around and let me explain some things to you.”

“Fine,” she agreed but with a clip in her tone.

I took it though and walked away before she could change her mind.

Unfortunately, the next play on the field ensured I never got that chance.

Chapter33

Charleigh

When my eyes connected with Levi’s on the field, I knew I was done for. Not once had I been able to deny him with my body, but now I felt my heart being tugged more and more and I had no defense mechanism to save it.

The look in his eyes told me he was just as shook as I was about Richard talking to me the way he had and now he wasn't even able to coach the game. Behind me, the entire game, I heard the assistant coach and Cam Nichols plotting and planning the plays.

Levi was quiet and every once in a while, I heard someone ask if he was okay. It made me melt little by little to know he was warring with himself the same way I had been. By the time he told me he wanted to talk, I was too curious and needed to know what he had to say.

I tuned back into the game after the other team’s timeout was over. I settled in on the ten-yard line, as the Jets were in the red zone and close to scoring.

Everything was heightened on the end of the fields because when they got that close to scoring, everyone played with extra pep and power. I knew I had to be extra alert and focused.

It was Atlanta’s ball and Cam Nichols took the snap, jumping back a few yards to give his receivers a chance to run their routes. I went down the line, making sure I was properly placed for a call that was most likely headed to my side of the field. Ty Black got directly in front of me and when I saw he was wide open, I knew the ball was headed toward him.

But so did everyone else.

Ty caught the ball and turned to run but the defense had caught up to the play and pushed him hard, forcing him out of bounds. With me standing behind him, I was shoved as well, and was no match to the size and strength of Ty’s body.

He slammed into me, hard, and I went backward several steps before I lost my balance and started to fall violently to the ground. I braced myself with my arms, hoping I could spare my head from hitting the ground, but it all happened so fast.

Within seconds, I was down, and a whirlwind of people were crowding me, asking if I was okay. I tried to focus, but there was so much commotion, so much concern. The voices were coming from above me and all I wanted to do was shove them and tell them to move.

I anticipated the pain, but it had yet to come, which I first thought was the adrenaline. But then I felt a small caress across my face, a familiar voice, and my blood warming from the comfort of the arms I was in.

“Charleigh,” Levi whispered. “I got you, baby.”

It was so low, no one else could hear. He spoke directly into my ear while everyone else was shouting. But after comforting me for a few seconds, he looked up and shouted toward everyone. “Back up, give her room.”

The crowd began to back up and I was left with Levi and the team physician, who leaned in and started asking me questions.

“Did you hit your head, Ref?”

“No, I don’t think so,” I rescinded, trying to sit up.

“Stay put, ma’am. Just until I can evaluate you.”

I rested back, wanting to curl into the arms of Levi where I felt safe from prying eyes.

“I got you,” he reassured me. Then I could hear him speaking to the physician. “I caught her before her head hit. She should be okay.”

“You okay, Coach?” The physician asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Just glad I was there so she didn’t hit the ground.”

“Ok then up you go,” he said to me.
