My jaw was open, and I was shaking my head. Levi wouldn't do that, would he?

I whispered the word, “No.”

It was all I could manage.

“I didn't confront him, Charleigh. But I know what he did. I’ve been around the game way too much to believe otherwise. Then when I tried paying him out for the fight, he told me to give it to Sisco or toward something in the gym. Charleigh, he let Sisco win, and not even Sisco realizes it. I don't know why he did it, but I thought you may want to know.”

“Thanks,” I whispered and started to hang up, too dumbfounded to speak anymore.

“Oh hey, Charleigh?” I brought the phone back to my ear so I could hear whatever Bobby needed to say. “I know you wanted a couple days off, but I need you here tomorrow at six pm. We are having a staff meeting.”

“Why?”

“Because thanks to this little stunt, I want to change some things around here.”

I nodded even though he couldn't see me. I felt so guilty about the role I played that if he wanted to discuss changes, who was I to deny him?

I hung up the phone and started to call Levi, but I stopped. Calling him would only be torture. I was curious if he threw the fight, but not enough to risk anymore of my sanity.

Like I told my mom, I could take the two weeks off until the next game and fortify myself. Then it wouldn't matter what he had to say, I would be able to walk away with my head held high.

Not to mention, he knew I had unblocked him. If he wanted to talk to me, he could have called me just as easily. He was still angry, and that was good. Anger was easier for us to deal with.

As head coach and referee, we could have our next fight on the field, where it belonged.

Chapter36

Levi

Ihad sweat dripping down my body, my gloves on my hands, and a hat backwards on my head. I was moving to the beat of the music that was playing, watching my footwork and coordination. It didn't matter the song, a beat was a beat and even though I didn't dance, footwork always got better by following a beat.

The music wasn't too loud, so I could easily hear the approaching footsteps that made their way toward me as I took a few last punches at the air.

“What are you doing here?” Charleigh asked, leaning on the side of the ring in the middle of Bobby’s gym.

“Waiting on you.” I crouched down and got as close to her eye level as I could. I leaned on the ropes and squinted my eyes at her, still angry at her for almost everything about her since I had met her.

“Was this a set up?”

I shrugged because it was and I didn't want to admit it. Before I left in the ambulance to be checked out from Sisco’s hit, I told Bobby to give my earnings to the gym and to make sure Charleigh was ringside the next day. I wasn't wasting another second before she and I laid things on the line.

“Get in the ring,” I demanded. Bobby had done me a huge favor and made sure the gym was empty. It was just Charleigh and I, and we were about to have our biggest fight yet.

“Why?” she asked without moving.

“Get in the ring,” I said again, standing up and tossing some gloves at her that I had brought with me. I backed away to the other side of the ring and leaned on the rope at the opposite side, crossing my arms and waiting for her to do what I said.

It took her a minute, but I had no problem waiting and watching. She was in long leggings, a sports bra, and one of those tank tops that hung low enough to see her bare waist on the sides. She took a hair tie from her wrist and put her hair up into a high ponytail, then climbed slowly under the rope.

Picking up the gloves, she slid them on and pounded her fists together. She started jumping from side to side, warming up and getting ready for whatever I threw at her.

“You fucking lied to me,” I said without moving.

“And you fucking lied to me. At least I feel bad about it.”

“When did I lie to you?” I shouted, unable to control the emotion she brought out in me.

“Everyday!”
