I’ve never been one for a yes-woman, and this one clearly likes to spar.

“Wyatt.”

Whoa. She said my name.

“I don’t want to waste your time. I just really need to know who wrote this book. My company can make it very worth their while. Financially, I mean. I have the authority to make a good offer and there’s room to negotiate.”

She sits across from me, arms propped up on elbows, hands positioned under her chin, and tilts her head slightly. All business, she has no freaking idea what she’s doing to me. She’s wearing some kind of heavy, kinky-ass chain around her neck, and the way she’s leaning I can see right into her cleavage to her deliciously round tits.

Fuck me.

“I tell you what, Amalia,” I say, knowing Levi will wipe the ground with me when he finds out, “I’ll talk to… my friend. See if they can be swayed in a different direction. They were pretty adamant, so no promises, but I agree, his book was really good and it deserves to see the light of day.”

If that’s not a mouthful of bullshit I don’t know what is.

Her eyes widen. “He? It was written by a he? You just said he.”

I feel hot. And it’s not from the wine. “No, I didn’t. I didn’t say he. I saidthem.”

Fuck. Did I sayhe?

She purses her lips and nods. “Oh, yes you did. The author is ahe. That’s very interesting. Most romance is written by women.”

I put my hands up in surrender. “Whatever. Look, the point is I will see what I can do.”

God forgive me for stringing this woman along. I know Levi has no intention of changing his mind.

“So, when can we get together again?” I ask.

The waiter drops off the check, which I reach for. She’s faster than me.

Shit.

“Get together for what?” she asks, signing for the bill.

Really?

“I’d like to get to know you better, Amalia.”

She taps the waiter’s pen on the table. “There’s no need to get together again.”

Goddamn. And just like that, she shoots a guy down. I don’t think I’ve ever been told so viciously to drop dead.

I kind of like it.

“I see. No problem. Hey, where do you work out?” I ask to change the subject.

“The gym down the street. It’s the closest to my office,” she says with closed arms. Trying to shut me out. I get it.

“No shit. That’s where I work out too.”

“No, you don’t. You’re just saying that.”

I shake my head. “Sorry to say, but that’s where I work out too. Guess I never see you because I go there during the day.”

That might be changing, though.

“How do you go during the day? Don’t you have a job?”
