Crap. I need to watch what the fuck I say to people. I might be hot on this woman’s tail, but the last thing she needs to know about me is that I’ve got money. I keep that pretty much between my boys and me. That’s it.

“I have a… very flexible schedule.”

Once again, she looks at me like I’m full of shit. Only this time I’m not.

Amalia pops to her feet and it’s then that I realize how tall she is. Seriously, I’m six feet tall, and she’s nearly eye-to-eye with me.

“Shall we?” she asks.

I let her walk ahead because one, I’m a gentleman, and two, I want to see as much of her as I can without her knowing. And boy, what a sight. Her tight black jeans have my gaze pinned to her luscious, curvy ass, and it’s only when we reach the sidewalk that I am forced to stop staring.

She hands me her card and extends a hand. “I hope to hear from you, Mr. Zimmerman. If I don’t, may I reach out to you in a few days?”

“Yes Miss Plum, you may.”

And with that, she leaves me, hustling down the sidewalk like she owns it, with everyone moving out of her way.

As they should.

“So. What happened?”

Jesus. I knew Levi would be anxious about my meeting with Amalia but I never thought he’d be waiting in my apartment for me to get home.

And with Henry, no less.

At least they took their shoes off.

I stroll over to the fridge for a beer. “Hey, nice to see you too.”

“Get me a beer, will ya?” Henry calls. He’s scrolling through my TV channels, most likely looking for an old Jeopardy rerun.

I sigh and head back to the fridge, returning with three beers.

“Well, I asked her out,” I say, plopping down on the sofa.

“Oh. I think I found an old one. With Alex Trebek. The OG,” Henry says, pleased.

“Please tell me you did not ask that woman out. You were supposed to get rid of her. Forever,” Levi snaps.

Yeah, I knew that’d piss him off.

“Jesus. You sound like you want me to throw her in the Hudson River. But don’t worry, she shut me down flat. Without a second thought.”

I’m not going to lie. That stung. I don’t get turned down a lot, but at the same time, I can’t say I was really surprised. I have no doubt she thinks I’m a lunatic for sending in Levi’s book, then meeting with her only to say it’s a no-go.

That’s a conversation that could have happened over the phone. But where’s the fun in that?

“Man, you just cannot keep it in your pants, can you?” Levi snarls.

I laugh and take a swig of my beer. “No, Levi. I cannot. Now let’s talk about your book. If you didn’t want anyone to ever see it, why the hell did you write it?”

He drums his fingers on the arm of the chair where he sits. “I… needed a break. You know, a break from the heavy stuff. Not that it’s your business. Or anyone else’s. I can write what the hell I want, and don’t have to explain why to anyone.”

I look at Henry for help, but he’s fully immersed in a Double Jeopardy clue until they go to a commercial break.
