I nod.

“Just be careful of him and his lackeys. He has so many people kissing his ass he has no idea what’s going on around him,” he adds.

“Yeah?”

“Siding with him could be bad for your reputation. You could lose your job.” He crosses his arms like a know-it-all.

I don’t tell him I’m probably losing it anyway.

“Look, Julius. Levi is an important author for Empire Ink Press. I’m just hoping you can keep an open mind for his next book. Give it a chance. Can you do that?”

He throws me a smile, the kind that makes me nervous. “There is one thing you can do for me, Amalia.”

Great. Here it comes.

“Julius, so help me, if you ask me to put out?—”

He raises a hand and cuts me off. “Wait. That’s not it.”

Not sure I believe him.

“I want you to help me publish my own book. It’s good, Amalia. It really is. Way better than that crap Levi writes. Will you help me with that?”

Holy shit. Julius has a book?

Speechless, I nod.

Is there anyone who doesn’t want something from me?

AMALIA

What have I done?It seems that with every passing day I dig myself deeper into a hole I may not be able to get out of.

Have I made a deal with the devil? Multiple devils?

This is bad. Really bad. Have I just boosted my career or ruined it?

What was I thinking messing around with the guys? And how come the top thing on my mind is when I can see them again?

It’s a mistake to get involved. Levi is my company’s biggest author. My messing around with him and the guys is wrong on so many levels. And yet, the things he wrote about in the Ryder Night book are the stuff of my dreams. Every single night.

Sure, the manuscript might save my job—in the short term. But if anyone finds out I’ve been with Levi and his friends, well, there goes my reputation.

And that might really give Cameron something solid to fire me over.

Levi’s a client.

Wyatt is a good-time guy.

And Henry’s so buttoned up.

Yet, for reasons I can’t explain, theyseem to likeme. Already today, I’ve gotten texts from the three of them.

The end of the work day comes none too soon, and when I get home from work, I sink into my sofa without even putting my purse down or taking my jacket off.

I’m numb. Just numb. I can’t even take off my bra.
