“Apparently a woman in a car blew through a stop sign and straight into Carter on his motorcycle. The police said both the motorcycle and car were totaled. They haven’t told us anything about his condition.”

“How terrible. I hope he’s okay.”

We all sit around in silence for a while. Everyone is consoling each other while taking turns consoling Reagan. This family is always there for one another.

At some point, Harley and Brody walk through the doors in surgical scrubs. Reagan can barely stand as she waits for them to speak. Collin and Jade are supporting her. I can’t help but worry about Jade. She’s heavily pregnant. I’m not sure she can handle all this stress, but she’s not letting it faze her, and I know now isn’t the time for me to hover over her.

They remove their masks and have big smiles. Oh, thank god.

Brody shakes his head in what appears to be disbelief. “Only Carter could be hit by a car while on his motorcycle and have fewer injuries than the driver of the car. He’s like a fucking Mack truck. That, or he’s a superhero.”

Reagan lets out a small laugh through her tears. “He’s okay?”

Brody nods. “We found no spinal or head injuries. No internal injuries whatsoever. He has a broken leg, a lot of cuts and bruises, and some road rash, but somehow, that’s it. The driver of the car will be okay, just a few more broken bones than Carter. I’ve never seen anything like Carter. It’s kind of a miracle that he’s not in worse shape.”

Reagan breathes a sigh of relief. “Can we see him?”

He nods. “I’d say just you, but I know none of you will listen. He’s starting to come out of sedation. He’s on a lot of pain meds though, so he may be in and out of it.”

I make eye contact with Jade and mouth, “Should I go?”

She shakes her head and mouths back, “Stay.”

I nod.

Everyone follows Brody to the recovery room where Carter is in the bed with his eyes closed. He has a ton of scrapes and bruises, and his entire right leg is in a huge cast, but he otherwise looks okay. His face barely shows any evidence of the accident. The helmet must have helped with that.

Reagan immediately crawls into bed with him on his left side, peppering his face with kisses, tears pouring from her eyes.

His eyes blink open and she breathes a sigh of relief, rubbing his face. “Hey, baby. Thanks for coming back to me. You scared the shit out of us.”

He looks at her sitting on his bed. “Who are you?”

She turns to Brody, wide eyed.

Brody says, “I’m sure it’s just the pain meds. He sustained no head trauma. It’s a good thing he was wearing his helmet and he’s a mountain of a man.” It’s true. Carter is enormous. All the men in this room are big, but Carter is the biggest.

Before she can turn her head back, Carter’s hands are on her breasts squeezing them. “I’m just kidding, baby, I’d know these tits anywhere. They’re the bestesist tits in the whole wide world. If there was a police lineup of tits and I had to feel them all to identify you, I’d know yours. Best on the planet, right Collin?”

Collin offers a huge grin. “Second best.”

Everyone starts laughing. Even Reagan laughs through her tears. Carter continues rambling on and on about Reagan’s breasts and how much he loves them. It’s clear the pain meds have him in a state, but she doesn’t remotely attempt to stop him. I imagine she’s simply happy he’s well enough to be talking, despite the less-than-ideal topic.

At some point, he takes her hand and places it on his gown over his groin area. “You’d know me in a lineup too, right?”

She nods. “Of course. No one could ever be as big as you.”

Collin clears his throat. “Not true. Some of us are equally blessed in that department.” He winks at Jade, and she rolls her eyes.

Cassandra nods in agreement. “Yes, Trevor too.”

Jackson scoffs. “Are you all kidding me right now? Carter was just in a major accident. Are we really debating lineups for breast and penis identification and sizing?”

Darian smiles as she slides her hand up Jackson’s chest. “But you’d know me, right?”

He quickly nods and mumbles, “In a millisecond.”

Once I knowthat Carter is okay and Jade doesn’t need me, I leave the hospital. Even though it’s after midnight, I tell Lou to drive me to Beckett’s house. The fragility of life and the amount of love in that room is running through my mind.
