“Hi, Bunny, you look well.”
My father pats my back. “I’ll leave you two to get caught up.” He looks down at Andie. “Andrea, would you like a beverage?”
“Can I have a piña colada with extra cherries?”
“People like us don’t drink that. We’ll find you something more appropriate. Come with me.”
He takes her hand, and they head off toward the bar.
I roll my eyes. I should tell her to ask for some of the Pussy Juice that Jade drinks all the time. That would really get my father going.
Bunny smiles at me and rubs my arm. “You look well.”
I try to subtly step back, out of her reach. “Thank you. So do you.”
She fiddles with her glass. “Are you seeing anyone?”
“I am and it’s serious. She’s the one.”
Her eyes widen. “Anyone I know?”
“You met her years ago at Reagan Lawrence’s party. I was with her that night. We got reacquainted last year and have been together since.”
“The tattooed woman?”
“The beautiful, smart, talented artist? Yes.”
My eyes catch Andie’s across the room. I tug on my ear. We’ve created a mutual bat signal for these dinners.
She smiles as she walks over to me. “Daddy, I need to go to the bathroom.”
I shrug. “Duty calls. Excuse us, Bunny.”
She nods. “Of course.”
We walk away laughing and high fiving. “Thanks for the save.”
She wiggles her little, dark eyebrows. “Time to pay up.”
“Okay, okay. How do you put a baby astronaut to sleep?”
She sighs. “I don’t know. How?”
“You rocket.”
She quietly giggles. “That’s funny.”
I look down at her innocent face. “Andie, if you don’t want to sleep here anymore, you don’t have to.”
She shrugs. “It’s okay. They’re more fun when everyone leaves. Grandy teaches me about art. We look at all his paintings. I like that. And sometimes I watch old movies with Buffy, and she makes really good popcorn. Well, she doesn’t make it, Elaine does, but it’s still good.” Elaine is their chef.
“Okay. If you ever change your mind, just let me know or give me the secret signal.”
She smiles. “I will.”
As soon as dinner is over, I kiss Andie goodnight and head back out to my car, anxious to get home to my girl. I need to get lost in her tonight.
Nico looks at me suspiciously. “Are you okay?”
