“I would like that,” he said.

“So would I. Will you tell me about your life growing up? Learning to fly must have been exciting.”

“It was. Learning to manage your wings in the currents is the goal of every young dragon. I remember holding my mother’s white ribbon in the last race before the bomb went off. She was so proud of me. In retrospect, I was wobbly and unsure in the air, but a mother’s love is blind to such imperfections.”

She chuckled. “I would have loved to see that. To meet her. What was your father like? Was he a blue?”

“He was a red, like Rhadan. He was fortunate to find his mate at a young age. My parents had many centuries together.”

“But only one child. I know you are immortal, but is that why you have few children?”

“That is true, but some couples are blessed with two, and on rare occasions, three children. I had a brother. His name was Quinton. He had been mated only fifty years when the bomb went off and he and his mate perished.”

Alana sat up. “That’s awful. How come you never told me this? When we talked telepathically, I mean?”

“I thought you were my imagination. When our connection was created, there were no dragon mates. Honestly, I thought I was turning dark and latched onto the thought of you like a net in a hurricane.”

Alana searched his eyes. That had been a dark time for her and yet it seemed worse for him. “You could never turn, Kell. Even when you were asleep, you still wanted to protect the clan.”

He pulled her gently toward him, and she allowed her body to rest on his as her lips almost touched his. Alana’s body felt heavy, and the surrounding warmth suffocated her in a dark embrace before her consciousness succumbed.

CHAPTER13

Alana inhaled the smell of dark roast and sweet bread. Had she rented a room over a bakery? She was used to stale beer and body odor. Her eyes snapped open when a warm hand slipped around her waist, and she was pulled closer to the rock-hard chest snuggled up to her back.

“Good morning little fox,” Kell’s voice practically purred in her ear.

Did dragons purr? The thought escaped her before his lips moved to her ear.

“Not to my knowledge, but if there is a way to get my dragon to purr, I am sure you can find it.”

Alana shivered, but it wasn’t from the cold. She turned in his arms, running her hands down her body to confirm she still wore a tank top and her underwear. She didn’t need a bra. Her sister had gotten all the curves in the family.

Kell kissed her cheek. “Your curves are perfect, but I would never make you uncomfortable. I sensed that waking up naked would not endear you to me. Though I would never touch you without your permission.”

She could feel the truth in not only his voice, but his soul. He sought her comfort and had removed her jeans. Still, it hadn’t been late when they went to bed. The light filtered through the partially drawn tartan curtains. “It can’t be morning.”

“It is. You slept through the night and since we have a long day ahead of us, I am thankful. Still, your sister has made fresh muffins and bagels.”

Her tongue moved over her lips. “Mom’s bagel recipe? I love those.”

“Mara, mentioned that. She said the blueberry muffins are another favorite. I believe she plans to bribe you into staying longer.”

Alana laughed. “Considering the food choices I’ve had over the last few years, I may take her up on it.”

Kell ran a finger down her cheek. “I hope it is not only the food that keeps you with us.”

She smiled at him. “It isn’t. Now that Mara knows the truth, I owe it to her to repair the damage I caused. Besides, I hear there is a sexy blue dragon that gives out free rides.”

His eyes twinkled. “Those rides are not free.”

Alana laughed. “Well, I hope you take checks and don’t expect to be able to cash them.”

“There is only one druid I wish to ride me and I accept kisses, not cash.”

Alana put her hand on either side of his face. “I think I can afford that.” Her lips touched his in a gentle exploration of his mouth. It was the first time she had initiated a kiss, and it was as liberating as it was arousing.

He broke away reluctantly. “As much as I wish to continue this, your family is waiting for you downstairs. There is caramel cream for your coffee.”
