She blinked several times. “How did you know I liked that?”

“You have mentioned it several times when we conversed.”

“But you weren’t awake then.” She remembered some of those conversations and that not all had been PG. You didn’t exactly hold back when you thought your friend was imaginary. She had been far more reticent when Kell woke, and she realized he was real.

“I forgot nothing. A dragon’s slumber is not like that of a human. We can still converse with our leader and each other. My body was in a form of stasis, but my mind was lucid by human standards.”

“Well, that’s embarrassing,” she whispered.

“I enjoyed talking to you. Especially when you asked me about sex.”

“You gave no indication you were... interested in that.”

“You were eighteen and your questions were clinical in nature. Because of your age, I didn’t know you were my mate. I enjoyed the illusion I believed I had created, but your idea of creating fairy wings so you could fly was far more entertaining at the time. I do not know what fairy wings would look like, so I...”

“You told me how to create dragon wings and the mechanics of how they moved. I remember. How could I have missed that? Your instruction was so detailed.”

“The spell requires transmutation, but it is within a druid’s power. None of us have seen a druid transform since we were children, as none of our mothers had the ability.”

“There were some druids who could perform transmutation, though?”

“Yes. It is an advanced power, and we were at war. There is a dragon in the caves whose mother could turn into a dragon, but he has not woken since the bomb detonated. Being a dragon that could fly with his mother was a rare gift, and he took his stasis to another level. He still mourns her loss.”

“I am sorry. What the druids did... what the dragons did to ensure we survived is unimaginable.”

“It is, but as I look at you, I find every lonely second was worth it. You are everything I hoped for, and you came to me long before the others. I am sorry I didn’t understand who you were at first.”

“Maybe things like that happen for a reason. I wasn’t ready for a dragon mate, and I wouldn’t have been so candid with you if I knew you were real. At that time in my life, I needed my friend to be imaginary and hands-off.”

Kell pulled her closer to him. “I will no longer be hands-off.”

Her heartbeat raced. “I get that.”

He rolled off the bed and held his hand out. “I can hear your stomach rumbling. Let’s head downstairs.”

Alana got out of bed. “Can I have a quick shower? I need that more than the food.”

Kell nodded. “I will meet you downstairs. I will make sure Legion saves you a bagel or two. There are a few changes of clothes in the closet for you.”

He left before she could thank him and grabbed a pair of black cargo pants and a long-sleeve T-shirt. Her sister knew her taste well, and the clothes had been at the store loft the last time she was there.

She showered quickly, not because she felt rushed, but because she found she wanted to see Kell again. It was weird to miss someone you had been with just moments ago.

I miss you as well. His voice tickled her skin as she dried off and put on her clothes.

You better not have eaten all the muffins. I know they are your favorite.

I am guarding them closely.

She laughed as she headed downstairs. Mara was pulling a pan of croissants out of the oven as Legion hovered. “You definitely got Mom’s cooking talents. That smells amazing.”

Mara chuckled. “I can’t bake fast enough. You have no idea how much dragons eat. They are like winged vacuum cleaners.”

Legion pulled Mara into his arms. “You did not just compare your mate to a dirt-sucking device.”

Kell handed Alana a plate with a muffin and a toasted bagel with cream cheese. She sat at the table beside him, trying to keep her gaze from his body.

Mara patted Legion’s chest. “I love cooking for you, but you consume them so quickly, you don’t leave any crumbs behind.”
