Kell avoided Breggar’s next parry of the sword, but he stepped close to the dark and smashed his fist in Breggar’s face. Blood dripped from the dark’s nose, and he spit red on the ground. “You didn’t forget my father’s lessons. Unfortunately, I learned to handle a sword before I could walk.”

“You have exceptional skills. It is too bad they are wasted on one such as you.”

Breggar lunged toward Kell, but as her mate stepped away, Breggar blasted him with an energy ball.

Kell was hurtled through the air and broke through the stone wall on the side of the massive room.

Breggar turned to Alana. “That will stun him for a minute or two. Long enough for us to take our leave.”

“I am not going anywhere with you,” Alana said.

Breggar laughed. “Come now, Alana. You know you can’t fight me. Your birthday isn’t until tomorrow. I was quite careful in my planning.”

She slipped the pack from her shoulders and held her hands in front of her. The white light formed on the end before blasting forward and lifting Breggar off his feet. He landed hard on the ground and got to his feet with a growl.

“You should not have had magic until midnight.”

“True, but my mom altered my records. You were thwarted by a simple human. Go figure.”

Breggar growled. “No matter. Your power is paltry compared to mine.” A fireball shot from his hands and while the protection bubble she erected protected her from the flames, the force knocked her to the ground and the wind from her lungs. She was crawling toward the backpack when Breggar picked it up.

He removed the claw from the pack and inspected it. “This is all I need, but I want to torture Kell a little, so you will have to come with me. Besides, I will need a snack later and your blood is powerful.”

She shook her head. “No,” she croaked.

“Come on Alana. Did you really think our magic bond wasn’t working? I altered that rune myself. And landing in a dragon cave, well, that flooded the rune with magic. I knew where you were minutes after your arrival. I waited for you to retrieve the claw. I planned to wait until you exited the caves. The wards are failing, but I wanted to take Kell unaware. You refused to leave, though. I can’t imagine what you two were doing in here.”

Her face burned, but she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of knowing he embarrassed her. “It doesn’t matter where you go. Kell will find you.”

Breggar tucked the claw into his jacket. “I am counting on it.”

CHAPTER21

Alana crawled toward the broken wall after Breggar left. She had tried to summon her power, but he had laughed, then left without another word. How did she return to her sister after this? They would all die if Adara did and Breggar would use the claw and sacrifice their immortality. There had been something off about his declaration of power. He hadn’t lied, but she felt he had omitted part of the truth. A crime she was guilty of on many occasions.

Her knees dug into the rocks littering the massive room in the cave as she reached the crumbled section of wall Kell had decimated when he smashed through. He was lying on his back, unmoving, as she pulled herself through the crumbling stone wall. She hissed as her thigh caught on a sharp rock and ripped her pants. The sting was accompanied by heat and a sticky feeling as blood soaked into the surrounding material.

Her hands scuffed on the debris surrounding Kell, but she pushed past the pain to kneel at his side. “Kell, wake up.” She shook his shoulder, but he remained immobile. How had he used magic to heal her? She knew he would recover eventually. The boons of immortality and all, but she needed him conscious now.

She focused inwardly on the power rising within her. While partially depleted, she could feel it building once more and tapped into the natural resource before pushing it through her hands into his body. A wave of nausea, sadness, and exhaustion rolled through her as she lay her hand over his torso and rested.

Her eyelashes fluttered as his hand moved up her back and rested on her neck. He groaned before his eyes opened.

“Breggar hit me with an immobilization spell. It is one of his specialties. I should have known better,” he said.

“This is my fault, not yours. My dragon rune alerted him to my location. He said the magic in the rune was boosted by the caves. I’m sorry, I should have known better.”

Kell pulled her into his arms before he sat up. “This is on me. While Breggar altered the rune to his purposes, it is dragon magic, and I should have realized the caves would boost its potency. He grew up here. He knows these caves well.”

“He would never have come here, if it wasn’t for me. My stupidity created the bond between me and Breggar. Now he has the claw and will use it to gain power.”

Kell touched her thigh, and the sting drained away, and her strength returned. “We will retrieve it and we will use your rune to track him.”

She stood up, dusting her hands off on her jacket. “We can do that?”

Kell stood, glancing toward the tunnel. “Yes. The rune is a magical two-way radio. It’s just as easy for you to track him as it is for him to locate you.”

“Since I’ve never tried to do that, he won’t be expecting it.”
