“Exactly. He’s quite proud of himself right now. Basking in his own intelligence.” Kell took her hand and led her out of the broken area and back into the main room. They jogged toward the same tunnel Breggar had used to exit the caves and soon they were outside.

Alana glanced up as the sound of breaking rock thundered around them. “What’s happening?”

“The caves are collapsing. The magic that was used to reinforce the main room has been absorbed. Our childhood home is no more.”

She touched his arm. “I’m so sorry.”

Kell glanced away from the mountain. “Don’t be. That was our past. You are my future. It has served its purpose and is best left to antiquity.”

She rubbed the rune on her wrist. “What do I do to activate this thing?”

Kell led her away from the crumbling mountain, though the majority of the damage was internal. “It is already active and will remain so as long as Breggar is alive. Once we are in the air, focus your magic on the rune. It will guide you in the direction of its twin.”

“Its twin?”

“Yes. The only way a dragon rune works is if both partners have identical runes. Breggar has one somewhere on his body.”

“He didn’t strike me as the kind of guy that wanted to be tied to a woman. Use them sure, but this is permanent.”

“Only while both partners are alive. He would have eventually killed you and then they would disappear.”

She stopped so Kell could walk the distance before her. While she knew what to expect when he shifted, the dragon scales glimmering in the light still astounded and amazed her. The dinner-sized pupils eyed her in anticipation, and she practically sprinted up his wing and settled on his thick neck.

“I will never get enough of this.”

Kell chuckled in her mind.I am glad. Flying is as important to a dragon as breathing. We will spend many hours in the air.

She grabbed the raised scale she used as a handhold, though she knew he would never allow her to fall. The rune shimmered as she focused her power on it and in seconds, she felt a pull in a northeast direction. She pointed, then realized the dragon was looking ahead. “Pointing while we fly isn’t going to work. How do I direct you the way I want to go?”

Normally you could think of the destination, but since you are following the rune, simply move the scale you hold on to in the direction you wish me to correct my course to.

“Like stick controls. Nice.”

He jumped into the air and used his wings to propel himself upward. He kept his speed even so she could concentrate on the rune. As he suggested, she moved the scale slightly when she wanted to make a course change. Her dragon responded immediately and within an hour, they spotted a large Scottish castle in the distance.

“Are you kidding me?”

Darks have inflated egos. I was expecting a mansion, but the castle is fitting with Breggar’s sense of importance.

“He is there,” she said.

Kell began to slow down and angled his large body to land on the ground. He is not alone. I sense three other dark dragons.

“What do we do?”

Kell landed, and she slid down his wing and dropped to the ground before she backed away to allow him to shift. In seconds, he resumed his human form and approached her, taking the clothes she had retrieved from the backpack. He dressed quickly, surveying the castle in the distance. “We infiltrate his home.” He took her hand and began to lead her toward the turrets in the distance.

“Four dragons against one is not what I would call a fair fight.”

“I have a druid. They do not. We are stronger than them, but I do not believe that Breggar will tell them about the claw. He will be the alpha among them, so I expect the other darks to flee when challenged.”

The flags that hung from the turrets flapped in the breeze, though she didn’t recognize the black logo on the yellow material. “That sounds about right. He wouldn’t risk another dragon taking his prize.”

They made their way to the outer wall before realizing there were several sections where the stone had deteriorated. While Breggar owned a castle, it was in serious need of repair. They peeked through and noticed a man looking at his phone.

“What next?” she asked.

Kell pointed to the man standing in the courtyard. “He is a dark with little fighting ability. We attack him first. He has a brother and if one leaves, they both will.”
