His power was like a battering ram in her body. It wasn’t the subtle touch of her mate’s. It beat into her, forcing her heart to continue to beat until Kell’s power resurfaced and Legion retreated. She breathed a sigh of relief when her mate’s magic took control of her vital organs. She felt like she was swimming underwater as magic replaced the need for air.

Allorin dropped her, and she fell to the ground as a dragon roared in the distance. It took her a moment to realize what Legion and Kell had done. Her blood slowed as the darkness encroached on her senses. Her vision narrowed as her organs shut down one by one. Her eyes closed and she took her last breath with the smell of stale dirt and growls erupted around her and the darkness snatched her in its embrace.

CHAPTER24

Fire burned in Alana’s lungs as she fought to open her eyes. Her eyelids were heavy as if she had pulled another all-nighter but as the memories resurfaced, she realized she was still on the ground in the courtyard of Breggar’s castle. Warm air surrounded her, but it wasn’t so hot as to burn her. It was more like a warm summer day, and she detected the source when her eyelids fluttered.

Her vision was blurred as her bodily functions attempted to regulate themselves. She understood what Legion and Kell did to save her. While no druid had opted for a true druid sleep in centuries it had been used when a dragon was hurt so bad, he needed to return to the slumber of his people to regenerate. A druid who was mated to a dragon in this condition opted to sleep with her mate as an injury of that magnitude took years to heal.

Adara had shared the knowledge with her years ago and she wondered if the temple had suspected the seeker would use this spell in the future. Maybe she had shared it with all the druids, but Alana had never shared information with them, so she had no idea what her sister or the others knew about the old ways. If this latest development taught her anything it was her approach to her magical heritage and her family had to change. She was hurting herself as much as Mara by living in the past. If she survived this, she would honor her mother’s final wish and rebuild her relationship with her sister.

She kept immobile as she focused on the red dragon landing in the courtyard. She expected the mage to attack as soon as he saw the shimmering red scales, but he looked at the dragon with admiration. Almost like a teenage girl with her first crush. The ground shook when he landed, and a flash of light revealed the sexy man she had met once before.

Alana had seen him in Scotland outside the temple of Geram. He had smiled at her before she had rendered him unconscious, but as he lay on the ground, she had touched his cheek and apologized. She hadn’t felt attracted to him in the physical sense despite him looking like a Greek god, but she felt a kinship and a sense of family. When she left him, she knew she had betrayed him in a way. Now he was here looking like Zeus himself to fight for her and she felt the same sense of familiarity. What was it about Rhadan that made you feel connected to him?

Rhadan was naked when he stood to face Allorin; his sculpted backside was something out of a bodybuilding magazine and she could see Allorin’s eyes move over his body. It wasn’t lust. It was pure envy though he looked lost in his admiration.

Rhadan flicked his fingers and clothes formed on his body. “Allorin, why are you assaulting my brethren? I thought we had an understanding?”

Allorin sighed. “Your power is difficult to resist. When you are not in my presence, I find it easier to shut you out. I must have the claw, Rhadan. I must have immortality, or I will perish with this pathetic incarnation.”

“I see your point Allorin, but if the druids die then we do. I do.”

Allorin flinched. “I do not seek your death Rhadan. But I need this artifact more than I need your approval.”

Alana pushed herself to a sitting position. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She understood Rhadan’s lure, but the mage was actually apologizing. The waves of adoration reached her, and she began to inspect Rhadan in more detail. His tanned arms were perfection, and his long flowing blond locks with those aquamarine eyes were something of a fantasy. Her appreciation was cut short when his voice punctured her mind.

Kell, shield my power from your mate. She is too close, and I must focus on Allorin, and the claw.

Kell shimmered in her mind like a caress. My love. Stay connected with me. Rhadan must do this. The mage is resisting him, which denotes his level of magic, but Cian will obey his commands. He needs a minute to redirect the claw’s power.

It was like a filter was placed between her and Rhadan. She could see him and appreciate his sexy body and luscious voice, but she wasn’t as mesmerized as she was before. What the hell was that? I understand he looks like a god, but I didn’t realize he has the power of sex appeal.

It would be favorable if that was all it was. Rhadan has a power that none before or since have had. He has had no teacher in his plight to control it and he will never know the feeling of... true love.

Why would you say that?

That feeling you had when you saw him for the first time. What did it feel like?

Don’t get mad, but I wanted to kiss him. I rendered him unconscious, and I felt awful. As if I had betrayed him. I assumed it was because I knew he was a dragon and I dropped him without allowing him to speak.

Had he spoken to you he would never have ended up unconscious. He had no idea you had that pendant and expected you to fall under his spell as all others.

So, any woman he meets will be enthralled with him?

Yes. His own mate will feel as you did, and he will never be sure she loves him or if she is under his power.

That’s terrible.

You wondered why I was not jealous you found him attractive. It is because none of us would wish to carry his burden.

Her hands clutched the cold earth and she realized he was still lying at the base of the courtyard wall. She felt his strength. He was not unconscious, yet he remained unmoving. You and Rhadan are planning something.

Aye, my love. He is keeping Allorin’s attention as I absorb some of the claw’s power.

Why?

Allorin is too strong for one dragon. My brethren and the claw will boost my power for a short time. There will be repercussions after.
