I will prepare Mara for Alana’s return.

Kell thought the world of Mara. All the dragons had a soft spot for the gentle seer. The woman who had sacrificed herself for their future, waiting to be reborn so she could ensure it. The reality that Mara may not be able to forgive her sister for her absence was a knife in his heart. He couldn’t live without his brethren, and he couldn’t survive without his mate. Are all the druids affected equally or is it worse for Mara? All the druids were connected to Adara, but Mara was the center of the druid community. The strongest connection to the temple.

Legion sighed. It appears to be worse for Mara, but we are more concerned about Ella and Natalie’s unborn children. Since we are not aware of what has caused this anomaly, we don’t know how to fix it.

We will be there in half an hour.Kell cut his connection with Legion before kissing Alana’s temple. “We are outside the caves. It is time to fly.”

She smiled. “I wish I felt better. There’s a good chance you will end up covered in lime vomit.”

“You will not feel any movement while we fly. Not this time. I do not wish to cause you any discomfort.” He placed her on her feet, but she clung to his arm.

“Did you talk to Legion? Are the others sick?”

“Yes. It appears it is worse for Mara, but they are more concerned for the pregnant mates.”

“Dammit. It’s too soon. What was she thinking? I can’t fail and I need more time,” Alana cursed. She glanced over the mountainside, lost in thought. The clouds were dark and tinged with black streaks as if they shared the mood of the druid beneath them.

“Do you know what is causing your illness?” Kell asked.

Alana’s hand moved to the pocket that contained her circle. “Yes. I need to get the onyx circle to Adara. To boost her power, but I can’t make an exchange like I did with the others.”

Kell frowned. “I don’t understand. What exchange?”

Alana nibbled her lip as if she had divulged some information she had intended to keep to herself. “I can’t enter the temple until my twenty-third birthday. That’s in two days.”

“I can feel your power. You should be able to enter the temple. I am not sure why it has surged early. Perhaps to ensure your safety.”

“Maybe,” she whispered, but she sounded unconvinced.

“We must heal Adara. Do you know how to accomplish this task?”

“It’s not that simple. I can strengthen her in the interim. It’s what I have been doing since she tasked me with retrieving the artifacts, but we can’t fully heal her. Not yet, anyway.”

“Then we need to get you to the cabin. You must explain to your sisters what is happening and garner their help to return your circle to the temple. If you cannot enter now, Mara can do it for you. Don’t allow your strained relations with her to impair your judgment. If Adara falls, you all do.”

She glanced down, but not before he saw the pain in her eyes. Despite what Mara thought, her sister did not like avoiding her sibling. “I know.”

He squeezed her hand. “I must shift. I will lower my wing so you can climb up. I will not allow you to fall, and you will not feel the cold or any motion once in the air.”

She nodded. “I trust you.”

CHAPTER5

Alana appraised the massive blue dragon, trying not to think about the naked body he had shifted from. He was good-looking like all the men of his species and she expected him to be big in every regard, but her blood pressure had spiked just before he had donned his scales.

She had read up on sex. What young woman wouldn’t? But she had never been interested in pursuing it. That and she had never trusted anyone enough to let them get that close. She was surprised she had been able to lie down with Kell without the urgency of leaving. That was her go-to, and it had served her well until today. Maybe she had to reconsider her ideas about sex.

Kell caressed her mind. Unless you are referring to lovemaking with your mate, I would caution you about such thoughts.

She glanced around the looming countryside. Rocks dotted the landscape, and the sky was a gloomy gray. The landscape was the complete opposite of the bright blue scales of the dragon, standing before her. He rolled his shoulders as if irritated, and his claws clicked on the stones beneath his feet. His muscles twitched in anticipation, though, and she could sense his eagerness to fly.

“I wasn’t considering another man. You have been in my head enough to know I don’t trust people. If you didn’t parade around naked, I wouldn’t have thought about sex.”

Parading? I cannot shift with clothes on little fox. Besides, I like your thoughts about sex as long as they are with me. I very much want to try everything you can think of.

She approached his large body as he extended a leathery wing. “You know that eavesdropping is a nasty habit.”

You are projecting your thoughts and, since they are about me, I hardly think it is eavesdropping.
