Alana ran her hand over the webbing of his wing. It was softer than she expected, and she smiled when the dragon shuddered in anticipation. It reminded her of her and Mara’s pet cat growing up. A simple caress was always rewarded with love and a soft purr.

She climbed onto his wing and scrambled to the base of his back. Her legs were stretched wide, and she grabbed the scale he raised as a handhold for her. While her mind flipped between her thoughts about Kell naked and her excitement to fly, she decided this was a chance of a lifetime. Soaring through the clouds seemed like a fairy tale, and she was determined to enjoy it, even if it killed her.

I would never allow any harm to come to you. In the air or otherwise. Surely, you know this.

She smacked his neck, though it stung her hand, and he didn’t appear to notice. “Stop it. Sometimes people think things. It’s not always literal. Don’t you ever daydream or have passing thoughts?”

An image of her and Kell entwined naked on the bed in the cave flashed through her mind.I have had many since I met you.

Her blood heated, and she considered telling him there was no way his fantasies would come true, but she found them intriguing, and he would know she was lying. “Since you are in dragon form and we have to get to the cabin, I suggest you keep your thoughts PG.”

I believe you started this train of thought.

“Dragons are sex gods. Give a girl a break. What do you expect?”

That you will explore all those fantasies with me when I resume human form.

She shivered. Hello, scaredy cat. Fantasies were one thing, but trust was another.

You can trust me, Alana. I will never push you into anything you are not ready for.

She believed him. In the years they had conversed, he had never asked her for anything. He may not have thought she was real, but in his slumber, it was impossible to lie. She knew him better than any other being alive, including her sister. She had trusted him with her thoughts and feelings when she believed he was a figment of her imagination. An imaginary friend she constructed with her magic to endure the loneliness of her existence. “Let’s focus on Adara right now. I think I am ready. Is there anything I should know before you take off?”

Hang on, little fox.He jumped into the air and used his powerful wings to propel himself upward.

She screamed in delight. Kell could make a killing at the fair. People would pay thousands to fly on a dragon.

His sigh was exaggerated as he flew.I have no interest in taking anyone to the skies except you.

She smiled as the clouds rolled beneath her feet. “I’m okay with that, but it’s hard to believe you have never taken anyone flying.”

I have taken Thorn many times when he was trapped in wolf form. He still craved the skies when he was unable to form wings.

“Mara told me that he still flew on the dragons’ backs. I wish I could have seen that. A wolf riding a dragon is pretty unbelievable,” she said.

We didn’t realize Ren was fused with Thorn. He retained his emotions because a wolf never forgets his loyalty to his pack. I don’t think we understood what Ren was doing for all of us when he shared his mind.

“Did Ren love to fly or was that Thorn?”

Both. Ren says he looks forward to the day he can fly with us again.

“I would love to see that, but he is confined to the temple. How would that work?”

The temple must be restored for Ren to have a corporeal body again.

She saw the cabin in the distance and was sorry their flight had to come to an end. His wings flapped in the opposite direction of the wind, and he approached the clearing with the grace of a sparrow. Once firmly on the ground, he lowered one wing, and she slid down with a sigh.

We will fly again, little fox.

She smirked at the nickname. It had become her favorite, and it was decidedly accurate. She was sly and just as quick to run. Considering how quickly Kell had traversed the mountainside, she would have to be a lot faster to get away from him.

He shifted and pulled her against his naked form. “You will never get away from me, Alana. I know I made a grievous error when we first connected. It was before Mara had emerged, so the concept of a druid connecting with her mate prior to her magic emerging never occurred to me. Please keep in mind that the modern druids are... different than their ancestors.”

“That wasn’t your fault. It was mine. I didn’t think you were real, either.”

“But you realized before I did,” he said.

“Once Mara introduced Legion, and he explained the dragons in the caves, I was pretty sure you were one of them. I didn’t know your name, but you had shared images of your dragon. You never shared your human form.”
