“Love ya, sis!”

“I’ve been so engrossed with my crazy life that I haven’t talked to you as much as I wanted. How are you doing? How’s the single life?”

Cody moaned. “I don’t like being single. I never thought I’d ever be divorced.”

“If this show is a hit…” Evie began.

“Don’t!” Cody blurted, not letting Evie finish her sentence. “Not even if I was offered millions of dollars!”

“Never say never!” Evie teased. And then she grabbed Cody’s arm and held on firmly.

There was a knock on the door.

Her heart felt like it had been pierced with some sort of caffeine-laced shot. She wondered if it would explode as it pounded fiercely in her chest.

Why was she so nervous?

She was home… with her family that loved her immensely… and a guy she liked and possibly loved was coming to meet her family.

Her nervousness was because her feelings were becoming more and more pronounced and she had yet to explain vital parts of her life to him. Those vital parts of her life might make him turn and run.

The knock came again.

Evie was frozen in her spot.

“Miss Call,” the crew member called. “You answer the door.”

“You’ve got this, Evie!” Cody whispered.

“We’re with you,” Spence said as Kimi nodded her head vigorously.

Evie took a step toward the door. Actually, Cody gave her the initial push, but she managed to continue the forward motion until she reached the door. She had no idea where the strength came from to reach and actually open the door, but she did and the sight on the other side melted all her worries away.

Matt stood there holding a bouquet of flowers, wearing a pair of worn-out wrangler jeans, his old worn-out boots, an Ariat winged shirt, and a baseball cap that read: “Barn Hair, Don’t Care”.

She smiled brightly that he chose to wear a hat with a meaningful message and then her emotions came crashing in on her. She began to cry. Before she knew it, Matt wrapped his arms around her and whispered softly to her that everything was going to be all right.

“I’m so sorry!” she mumbled. “I don’t know where all this emotion is coming from.”

Matt pulled away only far enough to look her in the eye. “You’re home. You’re in your safe place and now I’m entering it,” he murmured. The look of rejection was evident on his face.

“But I want you here,” Evie added, hoping that would take the look of rejection off his face.

“You do?” he asked.

The look of rejection went away, but Matt still looked serious. Evie nodded her head. “I do, and I want you to meet my family,” she insisted as she took his hand and pulled him over into the hallway. She closed the door and turned to face her family.

“Mom, Dad, this is Matt!” she said with a little leap in her voice.

“Nice to meet you, Matt,” replied Spence and Kimi.

“And these are two of my brothers,” Evie motioned to her two brothers. “My eldest brother Cody and my youngest brother Wyatt.”

“Like your hat, dude,” Wyatt commented as he raised and lowered his chin in approval.

“Thanks, my little sister gave it to me years ago.”

“Nice to meet you, Matt,” Cody said as he offered his hand for a shake. “She’s my baby sister, so I’m sure you can understand as you have a younger sister as well…”
