“Was it the tattoos? The long hair? The swear word that escaped his mouth?”

“Are you judging?” Matt smiled.

Evie pinched her lips. “I do love him!”

“And that’s all he needs from you,” Matt expressed.

“I am learning that. It’s just hard for me to see him turn away from something that brings the rest of his family so much joy.”

“And what is that?”

“Our re…” Evie stopped and pinched her lips again. She made a guilty face and then said, “I can’t say.”

Oh, how she wished she could get religion out of the way and then decide if their relationship could go to the next level.

Matt gathered her in his arms and then whispered, “Soon. Soon we’ll be able to talk about all this stuff.”

He kissed her.

This kiss was a little longer than the one at the front door, but she didn’t mind.

“Let’s go talk to your parents.”

Evie led Matt through the kitchen and then to the family room where they sat down and talked about the loss of Evie’s hair, farm life, and family life.

Eventually, they moved their conversation to the outside patio. The weather wasn’t too hot and they enjoyed their barbeque lunch as Matt talked about every interaction he had with Evie while on the show.

Evie was grateful he omitted the event under the willow tree, but they all laughed as they relayed the events of the drone and cameraman trying to keep up with them.

When lunch was over, Spence started gathering their plates and Evie stood up and began to help. Matt got up to help as well, but Evie insisted he stay and chat while she helped her dad.

Once they got to the kitchen, Spence turned to look at his daughter.

“You love him, don’t you?” he said after he laid the plates in the sink.

Evie didn’t respond. She couldn’t respond. She couldn’t say yes but she couldn’t say no.

“I know, sweetheart. Sometimes it takes a while for the heart to convince the mind.”

“But this isn’t the way I pictured falling in love. Not in the televised way for the whole world to see!”

“For most people, no. But for some… time will tell.”

“It takes time and real life to truly fall in love with someone,” Evie argued.

“I fell in love with your momma the moment she spat that red punch all over me.”

Evie laughed. “That’s right! It was at your first dance. She was so embarrassed.”

Spence nodded in agreement.

Evie’s brow furrowed. “Are you sure it was love?”

Spence nodded his head, “My love for your mom is deeper and stronger than the first moment we met, but my heart knew she was the one for me.”

“Then why did you date that other woman?”

Spence sighed.
