“It was just a warning, that’s all.”

“You sound sure.”

“I’m not exactly sure, but why wouldn’t they have tried to hurt you instead of running? It doesn’t make sense. They waited until we left, Colt.”

“I don’t know, Scar, but I’m not going to stay to find out and neither are you.”

She put her hands on her hips.“Is that so?”

“I know you can take care of yourself. But this, Scar, is different. Please,” now I was pleading with her, “let me show you that not all men are bad. That some of us do the right thing.Let me be there for you.”I brushed my thumb across her cheek.“Let me protect you.”

I watched her facial expression change, grow softer. She leaned into me.“Okay,” she whispered.“What’s the plan?”

“First, we’re getting out of here.”

“I don’t have anywhere to go, Colt.I thought about staying with Brooke and Max, but I don’t want to intrude and I certainly don’t want to put them in danger.”

I ran a hand through my hair.“You’ll stay with me.I’m staying at Wyatt’s place anyway and it’s too quiet most times if you ask me.It would be nice to have company.”

She didn’t look sure.“That’s asking too much.”

“You didn’t ask.I offered.”I stroked her cheek with my thumb, hoping to hell she was listening to me and added, “Besides, if you’re worried Wyatt would mind, he wouldn’t.Trust me.”

“Are you sure about this?”

I brushed a strand of loose hair behind her ear.“I want to know that you’re safe and I can’t protect you if you’re not with me.”

“All right.Let me just pack a suitcase.”

She looked hesitant to go in.“Will you come in with me?”

“I’ll be right beside you the whole time.I’m not leaving you, Scar,” I assured her.“But once we get out of here, you’re going to tell me everything.I mean it.”

“The less you know, the better.”

I shook my head.“I don’t agree with that.I need to know everything. It’s the only way I can protect you.”

Finally, she gave in.“Okay.I’ll tell you the whole story.I won’t leave anything out.”

That was all I was asking.

Chapter Nine

Scarlet

Ilaid everything out last night, telling Colt the entire sordid tale.I didn’t leave one detail out, even though everything in me ached to skip some details so that he didn’t have to be burdened with my mistakes.I remembered what he told me last night, though, “None of this is your fault, Scar. This is on him for doing shady shit.He made it your problem, but it is not. It’s so far from anything you should be concerned with.If he’s caught, the only one going away is him and his friend.”

Colt told me he had a buddy from the Army that now works for the FBI and if I wanted, he could give him a call, see what he could do.Of course, I was petrified that Rafe also had contacts that would mean it’d get back to him.And if it did, I certainly was a dead woman.Maybe I was being too paranoid. While the crime wasn’t first degree murder or anything, it certainly wasn’t like Rafe wasn’t capable of turning it in to that.He was callous and ruthless. As for Nick, he was a patsy and would do anything for that man. He’d follow him to the ends of the earth, or, rather, prison, if he’d asked him to.Frankly, even if he didn’t ask.Needless to say, I shot Colt down.“Just for now.Maybe we can revisit the idea when things cool down. But right now I’m clearly on Rafe’s mind if he sent that man to break in to my apartment,” I recalled telling Colt.

Shaking my head, I decided to forget the whole conversation for the time-being and let my mind wander to happier thoughts.I awoke to a note from Colt saying he was going for a quick jog, so I figured I’d keep myself busy.I just finished a great yoga session I found on YouTube and made my way downstairs to the kitchen, where I was, hopefully, going to find some breakfast choices.I figured I’d change out of my shorts and sports bra after I got some sustenance.I tied my hair back in a sloppy bun on the top of my head and popped my AirPods in.By the time Colt got back, I’d already be out of here and in a shower. And breakfast would be waiting for him down here.It was the least I could do after everything he had done for me.

When I opened the fridge, I spotted the eggs immediately and decided to scramble them and make bacon and toast.Perfect, I thought to myself.I pulled out the pan and began cooking the eggs when a JLo song began playing.I couldn’t help but sway my hips to the beat of the music.

I picked up the pan when my eggs were done.Whitney Houston came on next and I simply had to belt out to her hit.Turning to the table to place the eggs in the dish I placed on the counter, I spotted Colt staring, his arms folded and back leaning against the back of the couch in the living room.It was an open layout so obviously he saw everything. And he clearly enjoyed the entertainment.

I giggled awkwardly, pulled my AirPods out, and bit my lip.“How much of that did you witness?”I asked.

“All of it,” he commented, still grinning. He was wearing no shirt and jogging pants.I tried not to stare too much at his ribbed abs. This wasn’t the first time I was seeing him without a shirt on, but still.
