“You always seem to be around when I’m making a fool of myself,” I retorted.

He laughed.“I’m lucky, what can I say?”

“Lucky?”I questioned, raising a brow as he approached.“That’s one way to look at it.”

“You’re trying so hard right now.”

I swallowed hard.He was right, but I just shrugged him off.“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You can look, you know. We’re two grown adults, attracted to one another, it’s not a big deal.”

It was suddenly hot in here.“You know, you’re trouble Colton Ryder.”

He closed the gap between us and brushed his thumb over my lower lip.All I wanted was him.I needed him.I closed my eyes, waiting for him to devour me.For us to devour each other, when the sound of the door closing followed by a loud boisterous voice saying, “Dude, put a shirt on,” knocked me off course.

Colt smacked a kiss on me before turning around.“Wasn’t expecting company. You could call next time.”

“Who knew you’d get out of the Army and already have a woman lined up?”The man was about the same height as Colt, no more than an inch taller, his dark brown hair mussed, falling into his eyes. And those eyes—they were an icy blue that I couldn’t help but stare into. That was when I noticed the dog tags.He was in the Army, too. This was definitely one of Colt’s brothers, and since we were staying in Wyatt’s house he must have been away for the moment. That meant this must have been Deacon.

I cleared my throat as Colt crossed his muscular arms over his chest.“Sorry.This is Deacon.Deke, this is Scarlet.”

“Your—” Deacon waited for an explanation, some sort of label.

“Scarlet.”

“And where’d we land on you putting a shirt on?”Deacon joked.

He snarled.“For you, asshole, sure,” joking back.“But no embarrassing stories while I’m gone, okay?”

“Oh, embarrassing stories like the time Colt brought the hamster from his science class home and made me promise not to tell Mom or Dad?”

“You’re evil,” Colt shouted back.

Scarlet giggled.“That’s cute.”

“That’s not even the best part.He did it because he didn’t want the hamster to be lonely when everyone went home and the school closed for winter break.”

Colt came back, fully clothed, and gave him a look that, if possible, would’ve thrown daggers.“I’ve got plenty of dirt on you, too, man.”He crossed his arms and smirked.“This dude—”

“All right,” Deacon stopped him, “nobody wants to hear tired ol’ stories about me.Right, Scarlet?”

“I don’t mind,” I replied, making him shift uncomfortably.I changed my answer then to save him and chuckled, “Deke’s right. We should probably get going anyway.”

Colt furrowed his brows, confused, but went along with it.“Right, that.Yes, sorry, bro, we’ve got some errands to run.”

“Together?”Deacon questioned.“Because when I walked in it looked like you two weren’t going anywhere together except maybe—“ he stopped himself, seemingly thinking better of his next words, and tried again, “It looked like—”

I held Colt’s hand in mine and smiled, cutting Deacon off before he could stick his foot in his mouth.“Yep, that is what couples do, after all, run errands together.”But first, I needed a shower, I thought to myself.

Turning on his heel, Colt asked, “Hey, why did you stop by?”

He just shook his head.“Don’t worry about it.It’s nothing.”Deacon turned and left, going out the same way he came in.“I’ll call you.Nice to meet you, Scarlet,” he shouted over his shoulder and shut the door behind him.

I let out a deep breath I didn’t realize I was holding.“Now, where were we?”I questioned, hoping he knew exactly what I was talking about.

“Hmm, I think I was just about to take a shower and change.”

“No, I don’t think so.”I kissed his shoulder, then his neck, until I lightly placed a kiss on his lips.
