I nodded, taking in what she shared.“Thanks for telling me that story.I’m surprised I never heard it.”

“No one has.I don’t believe in living in the past,” she said and I couldn’t help but thinkthat was so Mom.

“Well, much like you, Scarlet doesn’t want help.Getting her to tell me what she’s dealing with was like pulling teeth, but she finally did.”

“You just met, honey. You should thank your lucky stars that she trusts you this early on in your relationship.”

“It’s like I’ve known her forever,” I said simply.

She sighed and wrung out the dish towel, still moving about getting things done in the kitchen, putting her freshly baked bread away and cleaning up.“True love is, but you’ll see that soon enough.”

“I hope so, but I don’t know. She only told me because I don’t think she had much of a choice, or at least that was how she felt. Her place was broken into and she was rattled.”

“There’s always a choice, Colt. And she chose to tell you because, while you may not see it now, she trusts you.Believe me, if I didn’t trust your father, I would’ve never let him get that close.”

“Thanks, Mom,” I said and gave her a hug.She always knew just what to say.

I saw Dad walk into the kitchen then and fold his arms.“What are you two doing?Colt, why are you keeping your mother? We have plans tonight.”

Mom absentmindedly wiped off the countertop that was already cleaned and dried and slipped off the apron she was wearing.“That’s right.Sorry, Colt.Your father and I have dinner reservations.”

“That’s all right.Damon and Deacon are busy, too.”

“Why don’t you go talk to Scarlet?”Mom asked.

I shook my head.“She’s hanging out with a friend tonight.”

“Girls’ night?”

“Something like that,” I said.

“Well, feel free to help yourself to some leftovers in the fridge. We had lasagna last night.”

“Have fun, you two,” I said as they slipped out.

When I heard the door shut behind them, I tapped my fingers on the counter and went in search of something to do.

I knew Scarlet was probably having fun with Brooke right now, and she should be, but that didn’t stop me from being jealous.I wanted to spend the night with her.We made love for the first time early today and it was hard to slip out of bed and get dressed.I didn’t want to leave that moment. It was just us.I knew nothing was going to happen to her because she was safe in my arms.

I remembered how it felt holding her, staring down at her as she pressed her head on my chest. The sound of her breathing, her heart beating filled my ears.“I’m so glad we met,” I replayed the words she told me, recalling the way I brushed a kiss on the top of her head.

It wasn’t under the best circumstances, but I was glad we did, too.

Damn it, I was starting to be pathetic.I had to get out of my head and do something.I picked up the phone and called Max.“My man,” I said when he picked up.

“What’s up, Colt?”

“Going stir-crazy without Scar.”

He laughed.“You’ve got it bad, don’t you?”

I heard noise in the background and then a clatter.“Where the hell are you?”

Max sighed heavily.“Dude, I’m in my own personal hell.Brooke’s mother’s in town and she’s driving me nuts.I’d leave, but I don’t want to leave Brooke alone with her. She’s here on official business.”

“And what business would that be?”I questioned as I grew suspicious.

“Grandkids.”
