She waved me off.“That’s fine with me.Max won’t be mad, either. It’s fine, really.”

“Okay, as long as it’s okay with you two.”

“It’s all good.Max’ll understand. It would be a little weird if Colt didn’t make one of his brothers the godfather.Plus, if Brandon was around, you’d probably make him the—” She stopped herself short and covered her mouth with her hand.“I’m sorry.I’m an idiot.Don’t listen to me.”

I chuckled.“Why does everyone think I can’t hear his name? That I can’t think of him?Brooke, I think of him all the time and it brings me happiness.Memories of him and I dance in my head all the time.I love thinking about him.His memory brings me joy now, not sorrow.I think that’s how I know I’ve moved on.”

She gleamed.“I’m happy for you.”

Just then the door to Starbucks opened and Rachel rushed in, pushing past a patron to get to me.“Sorry, sorry.Sorry I’m late,” she said, out of breath.

“Where the heck have you been?”Brooke asked, while I took a sip of my tea.

Rachel answered, trying to catch her breath.“My father, he called me into his office. He’s reassigning me.I’m heading up the firm in Boston.Managing partner.”

“Managing partner?”I almost choked.“That’s out of the clear blue sky.”

She chuckled.“I didn’t think it was ever going to happen either. He dangled it all in front of my face for so long, but he said I deserved it.And ‘it was time my baby girl was partner alongside me.’”She put air quotes around her words to quote what her father said to her.“Could you believe that? This is what I’ve been dreaming of since I passed the bar with flying colors.Hello, this girl, right here, totally meant to be managing partner.”

I began tearing up and couldn’t help it.“Oh, don’t do the waterworks. You’ll start me in,” Brooke said.

I laughed.“I can’t help it.I’m so happy for us.”

“Scar, I’m happy foryou.”Rachel grinned.“You are the real winner here.”

“How do you figure?”

“You found a man that loves you like I never thought a man could possibly love a woman.”

“Seriously,” Brooke interjected, “Max doesn’t even look at me the way Colt looks at you.”

“You have a man that can wrap his arms around you and makes you feel safe.”

“It’s terrifying,” I admitted.“But, yeah, I didn’t know love could be like this.”

“He loves all of you,” Rachel said.

A lone tear ran down my cheek and I wiped it away quickly.

“All the hell you’ve been through,” Brooke said, “you deserve this. You deserve a man like Colt.”

“I didn’t know how much I missed Miami,” I said, wrapping my arms around them from across the table.“Until I came back.”

We rose in the sisterly hug and then sat back down, holding each other’s hands.

“Speaking of Colt, we have a date tonight,” I told the girls.

They stared back at me and gawked.“Oh, date night for the two lovebirds.Isn’t that like every night?”Rachel questioned.

I feigned laughter.“Cute,” I said.

Brooke chucked.“No, seriously, where’s he taking you?”

“Crazy About You,” I answered.

“That restaurant has the best food,” Rachel gave her endorsement.“It’s like they want me to order everything on the menu.”

“And you did, too,” Brooke replied.
