I laughed so hard then I snorted.“I don’t think he’ll be that old.”

“You never know.”She looked like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders when she talked about this and it made me sad for her.She wasn’t usually a downer like this, but right now she sounded like she had no hope at all.

“Brooke, you’re going to get pregnant.I don’t know when, I don’t know how, but it’s going to happen.”I hoped she would. She so deserved to be a mother. She would make a great one, I knew.

“How can you be so sure?”

“Because the Lord works in mysterious ways.”

“We’ve talked about adopting.”

“There’s always surrogacy, too, if you want it to be your own,” I told her.It was something I’d looked into more than once when I knew I wanted my own child, but didn’t want to settle down with Nick.I figured I could always have a baby on my own.

“I never froze my eggs, either.Stupid, right?”Brooke inquired.“I should do that before it’s too late.”

“I never froze mine.”

“You have Colt.”

“Sure, but I didn’t know I was going to have Colt.”I guess I just assumed I wouldn’t need to freeze my eggs, that I’d make a decision on the matter before it was too late.

She chuckled.“True.”

I smiled.“Brooke, you’re stressing too much over something you can’t control. But, know this, you have options.”

“Well, I don’t want to talk about me anymore.I want to talk about you.”

“Yes, well, my baby is going to be surrounded by so much love.Especially with a godmother like you.”I knew the announcement was going to be a shock for her, since it was way early to even be considering that. But from the moment I heard I was pregnant, I knew I wanted to make plans for godparents. And Colt agreed with me—Brooke was going to make the best godmother.I knew we decided to wait to tell her, but she was so down about the children topic and I wanted to give her something to be happy about. Not that she wasn’t going to be Aunt Brooke to our baby anyway, but still.

Brooke held her hand over her mouth, shocked.“You’re serious? You’re not serious, are you?”

I laughed.“As a heart attack.”

She swatted my arm.“Girl, I never—” she stopped and started again, “I never thought you’d say that. Not now at least.”

“I know,” I said, “I know it’s soon, but I couldn’t stand it anymore. It’s going to be you.If you want, of course.”

She just stared at me and snorted, “Duh.”

“Good, because you have to spoil this baby rotten, too.”

“I will.I’m going to be their favorite godmother.”

“You’re going to be their only godmother.”I laughed again.“Aunt on the other hand is a title you’re going to be sharing.”

“One of Colt’s brothers getting married, too?”

I chuckled.“No, nothing like that.Yet, at least.I’m talking about Rachel.”

She screeched with happiness and the other patrons at the Starbucks we were at stared in amusement. She mouthed, “Sorry.”

“I can’t believe this!”she yelled.

I smiled, so happy that she was finally worrying about something other than her own fertility.“Colt and I are still deciding on the godfather.I hope you’re not mad, but we’re thinking of Damon.”

“His brother?”

“Yes,” I answered.
