Chapter Twenty-One

Colton

From the moment Scarlet walked into the restaurant looking more radiant than ever and leaned in for a hug and then kiss, I was positive she knewexactlywhat I had up my sleeve tonight. But I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of knowing she was right, just yet.“You really do look beautiful tonight, Scar,” I complimented her again.

Her legs seem to go on forever in that short dress and the way that it hugged her curves was distracting.Even with her crutches, she was still my beautiful girl.Always would be.And after tonight there would be no question of that. She would be mine.Forever.

Scarlet blushed.“You’re looking quite dapper yourself,” she commented.“You look good enough to eat,” she flirted with me and licked her lips to drive the point home.

I laughed.“I’d love to be the main course, but, unfortunately, I already ordered for us.”

“You ordered for us?”she asked and shifted in her seat, her eyes widening.

“Yeah, that okay with you?”

“Okay?”she asked, her eyes remaining wide.“It’s more than okay. You do whatever you’d like tonight, okay?I’m just going to sit back and enjoy all of it.”

“Wow, well, I’m glad you’re this excited about date night,” I joked with her, knowing we both knew this was no ordinary date night.

She smiled.“You have no idea!”

I could imagine, I mused.I grinned now and raised a glass.“Cheers,” I began toasting, “to the most beautiful woman in the world.”

“Oh, Colt.”She blushed.“To us!”She clinked her glass against mine.

Before drinking, though, she looked in the glass and frowned.

“Something wrong?”I asked.

She shook her head.“No, absolutely nothing.”She took a sip of her drink.“I guess I just thought—”

“Yes?”I inquired, leaning my hand on my cheek, ready for her to say what we both knew she wanted to say so badly. She was itching to ask where the ring was.Oh, this was going to be fun.

As much as she tried to ignore the fact that she so clearly knew about the inevitable proposal, it was evident that was all she wanted to talk about. We talked about different things during the appetizer and main course, but the dessert was coming out and there was no prolonging it.Now, I wasn’t popping the question during dessert, not even close, but it was fun to watch her shift tirelessly in her seat.

“Is everything all right?”I inquired, taking her hand in mine from across the table.“Because we can go home right now, if you want.”

Her eyes nearly popped out of her head.“Are you insane?”

I tried my hardest to refrain from laughing.“What’s wrong?”

She cleared her throat.“Nothing.You know how much I love dessert.I’m just excited, that’s all.And this place happens to have some of the best dessert in the city.”

“I happen to agree actually,” I said, “but, still, if you’re not feeling up for it, we can always just leave and come back another time.I know your stomach hasn’t been right lately. On another date night.Yeah?”

Scarlet grew more restless.“No!I’m fine,” she insisted.

I acted shocked at her loud response.Really, I wasn’t surprised at all.I knew I was goading her.

“I’m sorry,” she apologized.“I just want my dessert really badly, that’s all.”

“Sure, we can stay then.Whatever you want,” I replied.

“Thank you, baby.I don’t know what’s gotten in to me.I’m just so excited.Guess I didn’t need to yell, though, huh?”

“You’re passionate about your dessert.”

She nodded.“Yeah, that’s it.”
