When the waiter brought the dessert to the table, she looked at hers like it was going to come alive, where as I was content just digging in because I held all the cards tonight, which was sort of appealing I had to admit.

I just watched as she slowly grabbed the fork and began digging in, only she was more so demolishing the thing.“Scar, what are you doing?”

She broke it all into bits and stared, her face blank.“Where is it?”she questioned.

I laughed.“Where’s what?”

“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“Enjoying what?”I played stupid.

She pointed a finger at me, ready to tell me off and then blew outwardly instead.“I guess I was wrong.”

“About dessert?”

“Yeah, about dessert,” she said, feeling defeated.“I don’t know what I’ve been waiting for.”She squeezed my hand and leaned over for a sweet kiss.I happily obliged.

“Just ignore me,” she went on.“I’m just glad we’re having this date night.I love spending time with you, you know that.”

I smiled.“I do.”

“Good,” she responded, “then how about I stop acting crazy tonight so we can actually enjoy ourselves?”

I nodded.“You’re not crazy, though.And I am enjoying myself.”

She gave me a small smile.“That’s nice of you to say that I’m not bonkers, but since I got here I’ve been thinking this night was about something entirely different and it’s gotten me a bit on edge.I’m back now, though. And I’m never listening to Rachel again.”

She began eating her dessert and left me wondering what the hell Rachel said.Did she let the cat out of the bag?Damn her, it was supposed to be a secret. Now I knew she couldn’t keep a secret.“Rachel, you said?”

“Yeah,” she said between bites.“She had me thinking—” she brushed it off.“Never mind.I just want to forget all about it.”

The truth was I let a few people in on this proposal because I needed their help in one way or another.Rachel and Brooke needed to know so that they could make sure Scarlet got home with enough time to change and get to the restaurant. And, of course, Damon played a prominent role in the whole thing, but he would never utter a word to Scarlet. He’d have to answer to me if he did.

When dinner was over, we got up and I rested my hand on the small of her back.“What do you say we take a walk on the beach before heading home?”

She smiled, happy.“I’d like that.”

“So what’d you think of tonight so far?”I asked, trying to make small talk as we walked to the beach.

“It was incredible, Colt.Thank you.You really know how to make a girl feel special.”

“Scar, as far as I’m concerned you are special.”

She blushed.“I never thought I’d meet a man like you.Frankly, I didn’t think men like you existed.”

“You saying I’m a unicorn?”I jested.

She giggled.“I guess I am.But if you are, then you’re my unicorn.Because I don’t ever intend on letting you go.”

That was all I needed to hear to guarantee that asking her to marry me was exactly what I should be doing.I already knew it, but hearing Scarlet say what was already in my heart meant so much to me.

I always knew that I wanted a family, to settle down with a wife and kids.I wanted the white picket fence, maybe a dog or two.I wanted kids running around the house—my kids—with crayons in their hands, laughing and screaming with happiness. And I wasn’t proposing to Scarlet because she was carrying my child.Frankly, I would want to spend the rest of my life with her regardless. She’s the woman I want by my side for the rest of my life.

After the car accident, everything was put into perspective for me.I was no fool, I knew that every moment counted, that you didn’t know when your last one was going to be given to you.But Scarlet’s accident was on another level for me.It was heartbreaking and shook me to my core.I knew I loved her, but that intensely?I didn’t think it was possible to find a love like my mother and father had.My mother always said she’d found her lobster and that her and Dad were mated for life.I guess the same could be said for Scarlet and I—she was my lobster and we were mated for life.

When we reached the sand, Scarlet took her heel off and leaned on me for steadiness.I guess I should’ve thought the whole unsteadiness of the sand through before I decided to pop the question on the beach.Son of a bitch, I thought to myself. What a jack ass.

“It’s okay, Colt,” she said and I just looked down at her.“You’re worried about me walking in the sand. But it’s okay.I have you to lean on.”
