“You were horrible at it.”

A smile lit her face.A real smile that he hadn’t seen in a while.“I was, wasn’t I?I couldn’t stand the repetition.Knit one, purl two.Knit one, purl two.”

“That’s exactly what I love about it.”As soon as the words were out, he wanted them back.Especially when those moss-green eyes pinned him like a butterfly to a display board.

“You knit?”

His face heated and her real smile returned.

“There’s the blushing Deck I remember. You blushed every time I looked at you.”

“I did not.”

“You did too.”She hesitated.“Was I your secret crush, Decker Carson?”

There was a part of him that wanted to get the truth out in the open and be done with it.The other part knew it would only make things more difficult. And things were already difficult enough.

“Not likely,” he said.“I knew you were Jace’s.”

The words hung heavy between them.A barrier he needed to place there.

It was too bad she was drunk and didn’t know what was good for her.

Her smile vanished.“I was never Jace’s.”

“The entire town would disagree.”

Her eyes flared as she stepped closer.“Then the entire town can go to hell.I belong to myself. Not Jace. Not Daddy.”She grabbed the front of his shirt in her fist.“Myself.I’m the one who decides what I do, where I go ...and who I kiss.”

She kissed him.

If he hadn’t spent half his life dreaming about this moment, he might’ve been able to resist her.But he had.And he couldn’t.ShewasSweets to him.A decadent dessert he couldn’t help indulging in.He couldn’t stop his hands from gripping her arms and tugging her closer. He couldn’t stop his lips from parting at the first touch of hers.Or the groan of pleasure that escaped his throat when the heat of their mouths collided.

She tasted like tequila, lime ...and blood. Her blood. He couldn’t get enough of the heady flavor. He didn’t think about Jace. All he thought about was his need for this one woman.A need he couldn’t seem to control.

But she could.

One second, she was fisting his shirt and hungrily kissing him, and the next, she shoved him away and stared at him like she didn’t know who he was.

“I ...”She started, but didn’t finish before she turned and ran off.

Decker stood there like a stone statue and watched as she jumped into the back seat of a white Honda Civic. It wasn’t until the taillights had faded into the darkness that he ran a hand over his face.

He felt guilty as hell.He also felt ...happy.Which made him feel even guiltier. And stupid.Sweetie had just been drunk and mad about him calling her Jace’s girl. The only reason she had kissed him was to prove a point.

She belonged to no man.

She would kiss whomever she wanted to kiss.

Even Jace’s cousin.

Shehadkissed him.She had kissed him like no woman had ever kissed him before. She might belong to no man, but she had made him feel like he belonged to her.

Or maybe he had always felt that way.

He took long, deep breaths until he felt like he was balanced enough to walk, then he turned to his car. That’s when he noticed Bobby Jay standing by the dumpster holding two large bags of trash.

He tried to act nonchalant.“Hey, Bobby.Closing up for the night?”
