Bobby looked back at the spot where the Honda had been parked.“Family can forgive a lot of things, Deck. But stealin’ their women isn’t one of them.”

ChapterEleven

Over the years, Sweetie had come up with a lot of different methods to sober up after a night of too much drinking: Drink tons of water.Fill up on Taco Bell.Throw up.Or sleep it off.But she had never tried kissing. It worked better than all other methods combined. As she slipped into the back seat of her sister’s car, Sweetie wasn’t drunk anymore. She was stone-cold sober ...and stunned.Completely stunned. And it had nothing to do with her kissing Decker and everything to do with him kissing her back.

Although kissing was too mild a word for what Decker had done to her.He had used his mouth and lips and tongue to scorch her to the core of her very being and made her feel completely lost ...and at the same time, found.

It scared the crap out of her.

“What the hell, Sweetie!Did you just kiss Deck?”

Damn.Sweetie had hoped the parking lot was too dark for her sisters to see what had happened.Obviously not.

Hallie had completely turned in the passenger seat and was holding her open hand between the seats for a high five.“Way to go, Sweetie!”

Sweetie ignored her sister’s hand and glanced out the window.Decker was still standing there. She knew he couldn’t see her in the dark car, but that didn’t stop her from feeling like he could.

“Just drive, Cloe.Please.”

“Why are you so upset?”Hallie asked as Cloe pulled out of the parking lot.“Any woman in their right mind would jump at the chance to swap spit with Decker Carson. The geeky calf has become a studly bull. And did you get a look at Rome and Casey?Whatever hot manly vitamins they’ve started putting in the water here in Wilder, I want to take some back with me to Austin. The last two guys I went out with asked permission to kiss me.Permission! While some women might find that sweet, I don’t.I want a man who is smart enough to tell if a woman is interested and takes the bull by the horns.Or the Hallie by the lips.Believe me, if I don’t like it, I’ll let him know. And if I want to kiss him, I’ll go for it.So spill.Did Decker kiss good?Or is he still a cold robot?”

Cold robot?

That didn’t come close to describing the way Decker kissed.Sweetie’s body still felt like a pressure cooker ready to release steam. She couldn’t help comparing Decker’s kiss to his cousin’s.While Jace had been a good kisser, he had always kissed her as if it was a chore he needed to finish before he could take off for football practice.Decker had kissed her like he never wanted to stop.Like nothing, including a major catastrophe, would pull him away from her lips.

“Well?”Hallie prodded.

Sweetie mentally shook herself out of her thoughts.“It doesn’t matter because it shouldn’t have happened.I’ve done enough to Jace without drunk kissing his cousin.”

“So you kissed him?”Cloe’s eyes studied her from the rearview mirror.

“Yes, but only because that bartender makes strong margaritas.”

It was so easy to blame her actions on the margaritas. But deep down, she knew it was a lie.She had still been buzzed after the bar fight, but she hadn’t been so drunk she didn’t know what she was doing.

She had wanted to kiss Decker. She’d wanted to ever since he had walked into the bar with his messed hair, sleepy eyes, and wrinkled sheriff’s shirt, looking nothing like the pressed, rigid lawman he normally did.All she could think about as he interrogated Bobby Jay was if that was what he would look like in the morning after a hot night of sex. When he had turned that Caribbean-blue gaze on her, she had melted like a light dusting of Texas snow.

No.Alcohol hadn’t played a role in her need to feel his lips against hers. But she wasn’t about to tell her sisters that.Although the look in Cloe’s eyes said she already knew.

“You’re leaving, Sweetie. It would be best if you didn’t start something with Decker.”

“I’m not starting anything with Decker.”She wasn’t.The kiss had been a mistake. One she wasn’t going to repeat. Not only because he was Jace’s cousin, but also because they lived in two different places.Nothing could come of starting something with Decker ...nothing, but some more unbelievable kisses.

“Good,” Cloe said.“And after what just happened, I think it’s best if we stay away from town completely.”

“I’m not staying away from town,” Hallie grumbled.“Men get in fights all the time and nobody says anything to them.Look at Cob.That guy is a real asshole and Bobby didn’t tell him to stay out of his bar.”

“I don’t care about what Bobby said,” Cloe said.“I’m the one who doesn’t think it’s a good idea to go back to town.”

“Because of the fight?”

“Not only that, but also because of the weird thing that happened before the fight. The way all the men were flocking around us like bees to honey.I’ve never been the type to get a lot of male attention, and tonight, I was surrounded by cowboys wanting to take me to dinner, or horseback riding, or fishing.Henry Jenner started talking crazy about how he’d always admired my brains and thought we’d made a good couple. He’d run the ranch and I could homeschool our kids.”

“Your kids?”Sweetie stared at the back of her sister’s head.“And what ranch?Henry doesn’t own a ranch.”

“Exactly.I think he was talking about our ranch.”

There was only one explanation.“Mama must have told other people that they’re selling the ranch.Or more likely Mimi. You know she’s never been good at keeping a secret.”
