“I’m glad we’re all on the same page,” Rodrigo said, stifling a chuckle.

“What happened?” Severin’s brows lowered in confusion. “I missed something.”

Minnow leaned over to whisper in his ear, and his brows shot up. He looked over at me, and I forced myself not to shrink down in my seat or maybe slide completely under the table the way Prospero often did if he didn’t like what was for dinner.

I could see in Severin’s face that he was about to ask a slew of embarrassing questions. He wasn’t a tactful man. Luckily, Minnow whispered something else to him that gave him pause.

“Minnow says we need more dinner rolls.” Sev got to his feet. “I know when you’re trying to shut me up, woman.” He stomped off, and I leaned back against my chair, even though my etiquette tutors would have been aghast.

There wouldn’t be enough wine in the cellar to get me through the rest of tonight.

Chapter Seven: Valor

“Why on earth did you give him my phone number?” Tarryn asked as soon as we were alone in the car.

“Didn’t you enjoy yourself with him?”

“I mean…yeah.” She frowned. “Did you, though? I got the impression you wouldn’t want to do anything like that again.”

“I gave him your number, not mine.”

“With your work number on the other side of it. Is this something that you’re into?”

“Sharing you?”

“Yes. On an ongoing basis. I thought it was a one-time thing.”

She was still frowning at me, but her irritation seemed to have melted away, leaving only confusion. She had every right to feel that way—I was as confused as she was. For a moment, I’d been completely certain we’d never see him again if I didn’t offer him Tarryn’s number. It was silly, considering I could have talked to Tarryn about it at length and then passed our number along to him through Minnow, but it wasn’t the same as offering it to him in person.

“There’s nothing saying he’ll even call,” I said with a dismissive wave.

“There’s nothing saying he won’t.”

“So, I guess that leaves it up in the air.”

She scrunched her nose at me. “You want to have this man interfering in our relationship indefinitely?”

I pulled her closer and pressed my forehead to hers. “It’s just sex, Nymph. It’s not like the two of us, where I knew the minute I saw you that someday I’d marry you. I can’t imagine finding another man that would suit us as well when it comes to playing certain types of games.”

“You think he’s hot.”

“I’m not into men.”

She arched a brow. “I saw the way you were looking at him tonight.”

I swallowed, and my cheeks prickled with heat. “It’s not like that. I mean, of course he’s aesthetically pleasing when I’m watching the two of you together. I wouldn’t want to watch you get railed by just anyone.”

“Yes, I’m sure that’s all it is.”

Such a strange reaction from her. I’d expected her to be excited, but instead she seemed insulted. She wasn’t one to make a fuss about anything—she usually gave me free rein over our relationship. Of course, I tried to negotiate things with her as much as I could, but she would always insist on not having an opinion. I had to be careful not to treat her like a doormat and always consider her feelings. I hoped like hell I hadn’t pushed her so far out of her comfort zone that she wouldn’t forgive me.

“If you’re really against the idea of seeing him again, tell him I’m a prick, and that you’re not interested, and that you’re sorry for the inconvenience. Better still—tell him to call me, and I’ll set things straight. It wasn’t fair of me to give out your number without consulting you first.”

“You left this mess in my lap. You know how I am. What am I supposed to do if he gets pushy about seeing me?”

“I guess that depends on whether you want to see him again.”

“What if he wants to meet up without you?”
