[Nymph] Do you think he’s dangerous?
[Me] I think Minnow and Rodrigo would have warned us
[Nymph] They may not know. Showing up like that isn’t normal
[Me] And yet…
[Nymph] It was still hot
[Me] He didn’t hurt me or anything
[Nymph] Maybe he thought it would be funny to mess with you
[Me] He startled me, but it’s not like I’m afraidof him
A rap on my window made me jolt so hard I accidentally revved my engine. Good thing I was in park. I swore.
A strange man was standing outside my car.
“Yes?” I demanded through the window.
“Hey man, you’re blocking my driveway. I’m trying to get to work.”
“Shit. Sorry.”
Feeling like an idiot, I drove down the street and found a coffee shop parking lot and fished my phone out from between the seat and center console, where it had apparently fallen. I told Tarryn I needed to get to work. She was thinking about what to get for dinner.
When I reached my office, a coffee and breakfast sandwich waited on my desk.
“Kim?” I called over my shoulder. “Did someone already do a coffee run?”
“No, why?”
“There’s a coffee on my desk.”
“What?”
Our secretary came down the hall to my office and stared at the food on my desk.
“That wasn’t there when I put those files on your desk a few minutes ago.”
“Did a delivery person come in?”
“No. I would have seen them. That’s so weird.”
I shook my head. “Never mind. I think it’s a surprise from Tarryn.” Except no, it wasn’t. She would have said something.
Kim smiled uneasily. “Isn’t she in Prague?”
“She can order from there.” One would assume, anyway.
I sat down and touched the coffee cup. Still hot.
Someone called Kim away, asking about the upcoming golf tournament.
I considered the sandwich. I was starving, but wasn’t sure I trusted the food hadn’t been tampered with.
Bemused, I opened the sandwich, pulling it apart, and not finding anything odd. I ate it. If worse came to worse, my co-workers would notice if I got sick.
