Good thing there was no traffic in the parking garage, though, because we’d be causing a traffic jam.

“Your doctor? What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing is wrong with me. I need to get my birth control shot before either you or Valor end up ruining my career.”

I set up the GPS to give him directions.

“Birth control shot?” he said, sounding scandalized. “Aren’t you Catholic?”

“Yes.”

“Aren’t you supposed to accept any and all children God bestows upon you?”

“I’m a lapsed Catholic, at best.”

With anyone else, this line of questioning might irritate me, but he was such an odd duck that his habit of asking absurdly personal questions felt like a curious child asking how the world worked, rather than an obnoxious prick passing judgment on me.

“Don’t you want children?”

“The shot doesn’t last indefinitely.”

“That’s not what I asked you.”

“I do want children eventually. Just not yet.”

Well…that was a lie. The first day we’d met Loïc, and he’d asked if we were having fertility issues, he hadn’t been off the mark. Before I’d landed the role onRose Red, we’d tracked my ovulation for over a year with no luck. Now, with Valor in LA and my career finally going somewhere, we’d put off going to see a specialist until we could live together again.

“If you were mine, you’d already have a million snotty little brats.”

“I don’t think I want a million kids, thanks.”

“You’d look so sexy all round with my baby in your belly. If you were mine, I’d keep you that way. Every time you pushed one out, I’d fill you up with another one.”

I was pretty sure I went as crimson as my hair. The visual, along with my body remembering how he’d felt inside me… Why was the idea hot?

But god, no. I wanted a baby with Valor, my husband. I didn’t want this strange but gorgeous man to breed me like an animal. I shuddered. Myarousal had to be from him leaving me hanging, not from the idea of him repeatedly filling me with cum, right?

I stared out the window, too rattled to look at him, and not sure how to respond to what he’d said to me.

“I think my brother and his family are creating their own dynasty,” he said, sounding amused yet wistful.

“They seem very happy together.”

“They are. It’s the perfect life.”

“For people who want children, maybe. I can think of some friends who’d be horrified at the prospect.” I chuckled. Valor’s assistant, Kim, couldn’t stand kids. “What about you? Do you have children?”

“No, but I did get someone pregnant once.”

The idea surprised me for some reason. “You did?”

“Yes, but she chose to terminate the pregnancy.”

“Oh.”

“Was that too personal to share? I’m not sure how long a person is supposed to wait until they share personal information.” He slid me a sidelong look. “Too soon?”

“I don’t think so. I mean…I’m used to men who never talk about their personal stuff, but wehaveslept together. That changes what’s appropriate to share according to most people, I think.”
