“Good. I’m terrible at small talk.” He was quiet for a long moment before he went on. “Terminating the pregnancy was probably best.”

“The relationship didn’t last?”

He opened his mouth then shut it again.

“You’re not married, are you?” I made myself ask. I really didn’t want to know if he was, but I also didn’t want to be the reason another woman had her heart broken.

“No, and the woman I was talking about is dead.”

“I’m so sorry.”

His voice had betrayed a grief that was complicated, but it was grief all the same. “She wasn’t a nice woman, but sometimes hearts are not the smartest organs.”

My own heart ached for him. He looked so lost. “True.”

Following the GPS, he made his way through the crowded streets to the clinic I’d been using since we’d started living in the area.

“With Valor and me, children are complicated. We’d like a few, but we’re apart so much for work—and then there’s my career. It would be hard to hide a pregnancy in the costume I wear.”

“So, quit. Valor could easily support you.”

“I want a career, too. I don’t want to live in his shadow.”

“Raising children doesn’t make someone the shadow of their spouse. Look at Minnow—she’s the center of her family’s universe. Her husbands value her work and help with everything. Wouldn’t Valor feel the same way?”

“I’m sure he would, but acting is my passion. As much as I want children, I don’t want to give up everything I’ve worked so hard for.” Having both apparently wasn’t impossible, but sometimes my life made me feel like it might be. There was still time, but I also didn’t want to have my first kid at forty, and that was how my life was starting to look.

He parked the car, and I opened the door to get out, but he leapt out like the vehicle was on fire and came around to my side.

“I apologize. I should’ve gotten out of the car faster.”

“I can open my own car door.”

“You shouldn’t have to.”

“That would be really awkward for me during the weeks where you and Valor aren’t around. How would I get to work?”

“I thought we agreed on getting you a female driver to seduce.”

“But what if she gets jealous of you and Valor, and makes me give you both up?” I grinned at him. “I’ll be back in a half hour or so. I don’t know exactly how long this will take.”

“Can’t I go in with you?”

“Why would you come in with me?”

He shrugged. “Why not? I’d rather sit in there with you than sit in the car by myself.”

“This is not the kind of appointment a person without a uterus usually attends—even if they stay in the waiting room.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t know. It’s personal.”

“I’ve had my tongue in your sweet little pussy. How much more personal can an appointment be?”

My blush felt molten.

The man had a point, but it still felt strange entering the clinic with him. It wasn’t worth arguing about.
