“Because I slept with him, or because he slept with me?”

“So, you twodidfuck?” The rush I got from thinking of them together, even without me, was tainted by the lingering fear of losing her.

“We did.” She narrowed her eyes, looking defensive. “Hall pass, remember?”

I swallowed. “I’m still not sure how I feel about it.”

“I’m jealous, too,” she admitted. “Ridiculous, right? We’re both sleeping with him, so I have no right to be jealous.”

“I get it.”

“We could end things with him.”

“Is that what you want?”

“I want what you want.” From the wall tiles, I could see she’d moved into the shower. She started the water and began to undress.

“It had never crossed my mind that people would find out about the two of you.” I grimaced.

“It had never crossed my mind that I might have to hide him.” She shrugged. “People might have found out about the two of you just as easily.”

She stepped into the shower and put the phone in the shower caddy. It made her sound farther away, but we could keep talking. At least the picture quality was clearer than when she used to stick the phone in a plastic sandwich bag.

Water trailed down her beautiful body, and I longed to follow its path with my tongue. Did she smell like him? She probably smelled like a combination of the two of them and sex.

She lathered body wash between her hands, and I could almost swear the scent lingered in the air around me. Everywhere she washed, I thought about him touching.

“Do you consider us sleeping with Loïc cheating on each other?”

Her pause constricted my heart.

“No. Sometimes it feels like it is, though.” She shook her head. “I swear he drugs the air or something. I can’t think straight around that man.”

“I was straight until he came along, so I get that.”

She grimaced at my attempt at humor.

“He’s entertaining,” she hazarded, “but he does keep playing games to try to make us doubt each other.”

“Do you doubt me, though. Really?”

Her sigh made me wish I could reach through the phone and wrap my arms around her. I missed her so much it was a perpetual ache—like one of my major organs was halfway around the world, and yet still attached to my nervous system.

“No. Do you doubt me?”

“I had a few drunken hours of wondering if you were that desperate for a baby and I hadn’t caught on.”

“Valor Davenport! I would never!”

“If your biological clock becomes insistent, we’ll talk, okay? We’ll go for fertility treatments or whatever you want to do.”

“Okay.” A quiet spark of excitement lit her eyes.

“Is that a hickey?” I asked.

She looked down and found the spot I meant, on one of her breasts. “Bite marks. I have several.”

Fuck, she was beautiful. I imagined Loïc biting her. How she must have squirmed under his lean, muscular body. How she would have sounded when he sank his perfect teeth into her perfect skin. My eyes still felt hotand swollen from my earlier meltdown, and yet now my cock was getting hard.
