“I’m not one of the children. I can control myself.”

“I know youcan, but do you plan to?”

As we reached the emergency department’s front desk, he sighed. “Fine. We’ll do things your way.”

“Thank you.”

“Only because I can’t help him if they throw me in jail again.”

“Exactly. If you give yourself time to calm down, they won’t throw you in big boy time-out.”

He gave a reluctant chuckle. “Why are you such a brat?”

“Because I gave birth recently? I know you’ll defer my punishment until you forget about it.” She smiled up at him sweetly.

If it wasn’t for their banter, I would have fallen apart entirely at the first smell of hospital disinfectant.

We asked the man at the desk how to see a patient who’d been brought in by ambulance.

“There isn’t a lot of space back there. Who are you to the patient?”

“I’m his fiancée.”

He made a call then frowned in confusion. “Were you here earlier?”

“No, I just got here.”

His brows rose. “He’s here, but they’re saying his fiancé is already with him.”

“Yes. I’m his other fiancée.”

He blinked several times.

They weren’t going to let me in. My tears started again. “Please, I need to see him. This is my fault. I told them to go out so I could visit my sister-in-law. If it wasn’t for me, they wouldn’t have been there.”

“Two fiancés?” the man muttered. “How does that work?”

“And I’m his brother,” Severin said from behind me. “This is his sister-in-law and brother-in-law.” Rodrigo had jogged up to meet us.

“You can’t all go in,” he informed us. “The policy is one support person per patient.”

One of the younger nurses leaned over to whisper to him, and his expression changed. “Mr. Leduc has already been moved to a private room for observation. A message was left that you can go up, Ms. Davenport. They’ll send for the rest of you when he’s ready to receive more company.”

“I wonder how much Davenport paid them to get the white-glove service,” Rodrigo murmured. “Any amount would be worth it. I can’t imagine Loïc is taking this well.” I caught a glimpse of tense concern in Rodrigo's face before he hid it away again, and realized he was just as worried as everyone else.

Minnow hugged me, and I chased after the young nurse who’d volunteered to show me the way.

“How is he?” I asked as soon as we were alone.

“I’m not sure. Mr. Davenport found out my shift was over and asked me to come down here to wait for you.”

“That was very nice of you.”

“Well, he paid me a ridiculous amount of money and didn’t care that I would have done it for free,” she whispered. “I love your show, by the way, and Mr. Leduc is such a great addition to it. I hope he’s feeling better soon.”

“Thank you.”

“I can’t believe someone tried to abduct him. The police are still here.”
