I rose and gently lifted her into my arms as she protested. “My truck is waiting out front.”

“Loïc, people will talk!” Our woman smacked my shoulders, as though that would deter me.

Valor laughed. “After the morning we’ve had, I think it’s a bit late to be worrying about that.”

Chapter Eighteen: Loïc

If this is a dream, never let me wake.

Loïc Leduc, Journal 15

Tarryn’s hotel suite was small and simple—but as she’d pointed out, she’d only planned to stay one night, and thought she’d be alone. The queen-sized bed would be a tight squeeze for the three of us. I’d already arranged for a suite with a larger bed, but there was no point in moving her until she’d had a chance to rest.

Valor had cuddled with her until she fell asleep, while I watched them and tried not to pace, wishing that kind of affection wasn’t so difficult for me.

I now understood why Severin’s obsession with protecting Minnow grew even more intense when she was pregnant. It was difficult not to worry about Tarryn’s vulnerability when she wasn’t pregnant. Knowing she was carrying our child made me afraid to allow her to be so much as jostled. I’d driven so slowly to the hotel other drivers hadhonked angrily.

“Did you really tamper with her birth control?” Valor asked, pulling his arm free from under her neck and stretching. He’d carried her from the truck to the room. I wasn’t the only one feeling overprotective.

I held a finger to my lips and quietly left the bedroom. Tarryn needed rest. It wasn’t time to stand over her and start a conversation that would probably get heated.

Even with the bedroom door closed, the living room didn’t feel far enough away, but there were no circumstances under which I’d leave her alone in the hotel suite.

“Did you tamper with her birth control?” he demanded again, lowering his voice this time.

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hasn’t she asked me herself?”

“Probably because she hadn’t even had a chance to tell you she was pregnant yet. I’m sure she’ll ask you eventually.”

Until she asked me, he’d have to live in suspense. “Were you with her when she found out?”

“No,” he said, his voice full of regret. “I was in California, and she was in Prague.”

“I wish at least one of us had been there with her,” I mused. “I won’t make that mistake again.”

“What mistake?”

I arched a brow at him. “Obviously, I can’t leave her alone in Prague anymore. I never should have left her in the first place.”

He grunted. “And I never should have moved to California. I was so focused on my fucking career that I almost lost her to you.”

“Her loyalty to you has never wavered,” I assured him. “If I wanted her, I had to win you over, too. She’s always made it clear you’re a package deal.”

“So, I’m the unwanted extra?”

“Have I ever made you feel unwanted?” I smiled darkly, wanting him.

His throat bobbed. “No.”

“I didn’t expect to enjoy your company—to get so attached to you. I thought you hated me the way I initially hated you. My hatred was only poorly disguised envy.”

“So now we’re going to be what?” he asked, looking anxious. “Co-parents with benefits?”

“You’re going to be my husband, just as she’s going to be my wife.”
