“Yes, that’s me.”

“Hi, I’m Feng. You’re a friend of The Solis-Leduc family?”

“A…sister-in-law. This is my partner, Loïc Leduc, and my husband Valor Davenport. Loïc is Severin’s brother.”

“With those eyes, I should have guessed. Pleased to meet you. I’m so sorry about our new receptionist sticking her foot in her mouth. She’s a new rescue from a really heinous clinic and isn’t used to the diverse family configurations we see here yet.”

A rescue? I should have known the clinic my brother’s family used would be run by a fellow weirdo.

The woman flashed us a grin, and Valor’s irritation melted away.

“Is it her first day?” Valor grumbled.

“Yes. She’s going to need to sit through sensitivity training again. Hopefully, she’s teachable and not a closed-minded…jerk, or she’s going to need to move along.”

Valor grumbled something, but let it go. I was glad. The last thing any of us should be worrying about today was people who didn’t understand our relationship.

She went through Tarryn’s health history. Valor seemed to think it was strange that she was a nurse but owned the clinic and staffed it with other progressive medical professionals.

“The Solis-Leducs provide the clinic with most of its funding. Didn’t you know?”

I hadn’t known. It was nice my brother was spending Martine’s evil money on worthwhile endeavors.

“We mostly serve the queer community, the poly community, neurodivergents, deliberately single parents—really, anyone who tends to get discriminated against in mainstream hospitals.”

She got Tarryn settled on the padded table. Unable to resist, I planted a kiss on her baby bump. Excitement and anxiety warred inside me, and Tarryn and Valor were clearly feeling the same way.

“I’ve been looking into your options in Prague in case you need to do some of your appointments there. There are several options there that we’d highly recommend. We’ll give you the list on your way out.”

Another woman entered the room, whom she introduced as a sonographer.

“If you need anything just summon me.”

Like a small, benevolent demon?

She gave us a friendly wave and left.

The woman conducting the ultrasound got down to business efficiently but didn’t make us feel rushed.

She was silent for the first few moments while she moved the sensor around, with the screen facing only her. Anxiety ate at my guts, and I tried my best to seem calm, but considering how silent we all were, Tarryn and Valor had to be feeling the same way.

Tarryn’s small hand was sandwiched between ours, and Valor and I stood next to the exam table like useless bookends.

“Is everything okay?” I finally blurted, not able to take another moment of wondering.

She turned the screen toward us.

“Everything’s looking good.” She gave us a reassuring smile.

A strangled laugh escaped me before I got a hold of myself. I was grinning like a dork, but so were my partners. Tears tingled behind my eyes and spilled over before I could stop them, and I realized Tarryn was in the same condition. Valor was only barely in better control of himself.

The sonographer played tour guide, showing us the baby from differed angles, letting us marvel at the little alien we’d planted in Tarryn’s belly. Itlooked far more person-shaped than I was expecting, considering the stages I’d looked up on the internet.

It was hard to believe that only a short while ago I’d been waiting outside the delivery room here in nervous anticipation for my brother’s family’s babies to be born, and now we were here for us.

“Is there only one?” I eventually asked.

“Yes, there’s only one in there.” The woman grinned. “Were you hoping for more?”
