What made people into such judgmental assholes anyway? We weren’t hurting anyone.

It took a bit before Tarryn picked up.

“Don’t tell me,” she said in lieu of hello. “You guys need a ride home because you’re both hammered.”

“No such luck. We’ve had a few, but we’re…looking forward to seeing you when we get home.” I grinned and leaned back against the building. “We’ll call a cab when we’re done so you don’t have to come all the way here.”

“You’re the best!” She sighed. “I’m glad to hear you’re having fun, too. We’ve been online shopping for furniture, playing with babies when we can actually get the guys to hand them over, and we are just about to watch a romcom I’ve been wanting to see.”

“Have I mentioned I’m really happy you’re hitting it off with our soon-to-be sister-in-law?” Usually, we watched her romcoms together, but it was good for her to have a friend other than Loïc and me. We’d moved so much, and we worked so hard, that our friendships with other people tended not to survive.

“Don’tworry. If it’s good, I’ll make you guys watch it with me some other time.”

“Lucky us,” I teased, still not willing to admit I loved watching them with her. “Not sorry you didn’t come out with us tonight?”

“A bit, but only because I love watching him dance. I can’t drink, and none of my sexy clothes fit anymore, so I think it would have been torture. Where’s Loïc?”

“I can’t keep up with him. He’s basically been on the dancefloor since we got here, so I figured I’d step outside and give you a call before our next round of drinks came.”

“Bold of you to leave him alone in the club. Aren’t you worried he might run off with someone hotter than us?”

“Hardly. That man is possibly as infatuated with you as I am.” I lowered my voice. “He also gave me a blowjob in the men’s room.”

She cackled. “You sound so scandalized. So…are his blowjobs better than mine?”

“They’re completely different. It would be impossible to compare.”

“Such a diplomat.” She sighed. “I wish I could have watched. Well, take care of each other. I’m going to go before Minnow gets back here with the popcorn. She insisted on making it herself, but she’s getting tired. Remind me not to have twins.”

“I will remind you of no such thing.” I gave her an evil laugh, and she told me to shut up, which only made me laugh more.

“Byeee,” she said in play irritation. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

“There’s a whole bachelorette party trying to pick us up.”

“Can you blame them?”

“Brat.”

“Seriously, though. Be careful. Some bachelorette parties get seriously out of hand.” She was still laughing as we said our I-love-yous, and I hung up.

When I got back to our table, the new drinks I’d ordered were there, but Loïc still wasn’t. That man had such good stamina he could teach classes.

Knowing him, despite his exertions, he’d still have enough energy to chase me through all the alleyways in the area if I wasn’t careful not to incite his sexual violence. Then again, maybe I wanted to.

After a few minutes, I still hadn’t spotted him. Weird. Maybe he wasn’t feeling well, and he was in the bathroom? Or maybe he was planning a nefarious scheme—expecting me to follow him out into the alleyway?

I headed toward the bathroom to check there first. He wasn’t there.

When I’d gone out to call Tarryn, I’d spotted another men’s room near the front door. Maybe he was there?

Headed in that direction, I spotted him coming out of the front restroom hallway with someone, their arm around his shoulders, like a lover. They were making their way to the front door.

Who the fuck was he with, and where the fuck was he going?

Briefly, I wondered if this was some kind of joke that I would inevitably find not funny and he would find hilarious, but he was dragging his feet, barely staying upright. What the fuck? We’d been drinking, but he’d been fine a few minutes ago.

“Loïc!” I called, not caring if I was making a scene. The music drowned me out.
