He pulled the bloody dagger out, finally letting go of my hair.

My hands instantly pressed against my stomach, against the piercing pain that hit me a few seconds later.

No.

I dropped to my knees.

Espek laughed again, and the sound of it was almost drowned out by the blood pumping through my ears.

And then I watched as Espek stepped toward Venom, picked her up, and summoned his magic.

A gust of wind rushed in his direction before I watched the sharp steel of the blade break.

He was using natural magic, manipulating the elements to shatter Venom.

The blade snapped with a gut-wrenching crack of metal.

If I hadn’t already been bleeding, I was sure I would have fallen to pieces.

I didn’t recognize the gruntled cry that escaped me, from somewhere deep in my body, clawing up and out of my throat.

“Enjoy fighting with this,” he hissed.

My eyes landed on Lanson, who stood frozen in place a few feet away.

Shock pulsed through my body, warm blood poured from my hands.

“Huntyr.” He held his hands out as if approaching a wild animal.

“Lanson, help me.”

What was he doing? Why wasn’t he helping me?I was vaguely aware of Espek kicking the handle of my broken blade and storming out of the courtyard.

Was vaguely aware of the horror dripping from Lanson’s features.

“Lanson,” I said again, barely a breath.Hells, I was speaking aloud, wasn’t I?

“I can’t do this,” Lanson sighed, holding his hands at his sides and backing up like I was a wild, rabid vampyre ready to pounce.

Not a bleeding girl who needed help.

Every movement hurt. I tried to stand, but the wound in my torso had sliced my muscles.

“Help me! I need to get to my room. I need to stop the bleeding!”

He shook his head. “You killed him, didn’t you? You really are a killer, just like you said.”

I laughed. Actually laughed.

“You’re scaring me, Huntyr.”

I quit laughing long enough to see the horror on his face. “Lanson,” I breathed—begged. “I’m losing too much blood. I need you to help me.”

I knew what panic looked like. I had seen it way too often when Lord would bring new trainees to Phantom.

The wide eyes, the open mouth.

I knew exactly what was going on in Lanson’s mind.
