“Knock!” Katarina yelled, while Zev looked like he was ready to bite Mr. Potter’s head off if he was corporeal.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I think you need to come downstairs now.”

He didn’t say anything else, disappearing before any of us could say anything. Annoyance raced through me, hating that he didn’t just give us an explanation right away.

“Kit Kat, why don’t you stay here, I’m sure it’s nothing,” Lucien said, kissing her nose.

His need to protect her was going to get him in trouble, but from how she looked like she was ready to pass out, it seemed like it was the best idea.

“We’ll be right back,” I said, pushing her back onto the bed.

She glared at me, but I could see she was exhausted. The night was a lot more exciting than we were used to and she still wasn’t a hundred percent.

“If it’s about Clodius, I should be there,” she snapped.

“If it was, I think he would have said it was Clodius,” I said, gearing up to argue with her.

“I’ll come get you if it’s about him,” Zev said, like it was final, but Katarina turned to glare at him. “Please?”

It was out of character to hear him say please so I wasn’t surprised to see her taken aback. He pulled back the covers on the bed to let her in. I expected her to lash out, but it seemed the ‘please’ had worked.

“You better come back for me,” she said, getting into the bed.

Zev nodded at her before kissing her forehead.

I walked out of the room curious to see what Mr. Potter wanted us for, hoping it wasn’t Clodius trying to escape or that he had escaped. Our bond was full of apprehension when we walked down the stairs, but most of all there was worry for Katarina.

“What couldn’t wait—” Zev’s voice stopped abruptly when we saw three men on the floor tied up.

“It seems they sent a rescue team for Clodius and there were two more who ran away before they could get to them,” Mr. Potter said, worry lacing his voice.

“So, five total?” Zev asked.

“I think there were at least seven, but I could be wrong,” he sighed.

My heart pounded as fear slammed into me.

Lucien swore while Zev threw something across the room and all I could do was hope that they didn’t send an army of men because there was no way we would be able to keep Katarina safe. Maybe we should have sent her with Serena.

KATARINA

When the guys told me that Mr. Potter found men outside trying to break Clodius free, I immediately wanted to panic. Even though they promised to keep me safe, I knew it was really up to me. I needed to get more adept with my magic and with my hand to hand combat.

Lucien hated that I had decided to train, but I couldn’t just sit here, waiting to be saved like some damsel in distress. I was more than capable of defending myself, but I had to be better. In the days following after the men were found, we interrogated them incessantly, hoping to gain some type of information, but these men were good. No one was talking, but that didn’t mean I couldn't pick up on certain things.

First off, my father had not sent these men, Caston was to blame. They were loyal to his family, but other than that, they didn’t give too much away. When the last man didn’t talk, I lit him on fire in frustration. I was hoping his screams would give his friends some incentive to talk, so I left the dungeon hoping that tomorrow someone would be more willing to answer questions.

I walked up the stairs getting tired more easily. The guys stayed down there, deciding if someone looked like they wantedto talk. The dungeon, or whatever they wanted to call it, smelled awful, so I didn’t like to stay down there for too long and I had to get ready for a call with Serena. As much as I wanted to stay for more torture, I needed an update on Ryder. We also needed to talk about her accusations.

Spring could not come fast enough. The castle was way too cold as I pulled my sweater tightly around me, walking up the stairs. The winter had been brutal with it snowing almost every day. As much as I loved to take a walk outside, a foot of snow was pretty hard to walk in. The fire was roaring when I entered the room feeling the warmth enveloping me.

I made it back in time when the necklace made a sound. Walking to my nightstand I picked it up immediately, nervous about talking to her.

“Katarina,” her voice sounded muffled.
