The need to cry threw me off, not knowing where it came from.

“Hey Serena,” I said, clearing my throat.

“I can’t talk long,” she said in a rush. “Is it ok if I come over tomorrow? I might have something that will allow me through the wards, but if not, I think we need to talk face to face. I also have things for you.”

“Uh…” I didn’t know what to say, but I knew she was right.

“Ok, I’ll see you tomorrow at the gate, I have to go,” she said, before the necklace went silent.

A churning in my gut told me something was going on with Serena and it wasn’t good. She also didn’t say anything about Ryder which made me worry even more.

“Are you ok, Kit Kat?”

I looked up to see Lucien at the door.

“Yeah, I just talked to Serena,” I said, still trying to figure out what was going on.

“That was a quick chat, I assumed you would be talking for hours especially after how she treated you.” He walked to the bed wearing a shirt, another reason why I hated the cold.

“We didn’t talk long because it sounded like she was busy,” I said, still feeling the lingering worry. “She said she was going to stop by tomorrow, then ended the call quickly.”

“You think she’s ok?” He tilted my chin up to look at him.

I pursed my lips as I thought of all the things that could happen to her. Caston might blame her for Clodius going missing, or my father might have found out she visited me.

“I don’t know, there’s so much that could have happened, but I don’t want to think the worst,” I said, as he pulled me to him.

I breathed in his scent loving the hint of something burning. That smell soothed me, slowing down my rampant thoughts.

“We will talk when she gets here tomorrow.”

My brain was filtering through all the things that might go wrong with her coming to visit me and help me with this curse.

“Do you think she?—”

There was no warning before my mind was thrown into a vision.

“I know it's hard, but I think it's something we need to do for her, we can’t allow for her to be used.”

“You think I don’t know that they are looking for retribution,” a man replied.

“Then we have to do this. You know she’s seen the same fate over and over again, if we don’t do something now, she and the coven will be lost forever.”

“That is all you’ve talked about since I was a child. I know what we have to do, but it doesn’t make it easier. You think I want to put my child down this road?” she snapped.

It was like looking at the scene through a TV screen, but I couldn’t make out who was talking.

“I’m sorry, my son.” The woman hugged the man.

“I just wish she didn’t have to go through this. I wish she had never prophesied about my daughter, and I wish I could kill the little shit before anything happens,” the man snarled. “She is my fucking daughter, and she shouldn’t have to go through this for some curse made by a woman who was scorned.”

“Paying the sins of our ancestors is a reality we can’t escape. That is why I’ve raised you to see the truth instead of continuing down the road we were heading.”

“Mother, if Ka?—”

My vision ended abruptly, making me gasp as it felt like I was thrown back into my body.

“Kit Kat.” Lucien was leaning over me with his face inches from mine. “Thank the goddess.”
