“I think we should just kill him, keeping him alive is too risky.” Zev was breathing a little hard, like he had been beating on him for a while.

“He’s more trouble than he’s worth,” Lucien said, ushering me out of the room into the hallway.

Aeon was pacing, his face pinched in concentration.

“What happened, Aeon?” Zev asked, walking out with us.

“I came down yesterday to talk to the man hoping to get answers, to maybe fill in the blanks that the other two left us with.” He ran his hand through his hair. “He told me that your father had sent him, they were supposed to bring Clodius back, and under no circumstances was Caston supposed to retrieve him.”

“What? They said Caston sent them,” I said confused.

“The men Mr. Potter said ran away were the group he was with. He was the only one caught and he also said that this was a bigger chess game than we knew.” He stopped pacing, and looked at me like he didn’t want to say what he had to say next.“He also said that we all needed to be mated and that you were the most important person. We had to keep you alive no matter the cost.”

I looked at Aeon wondering why the hell it took him so long to tell us this. He must have sensed my mood.

“Things have been happening fast with us mating, and then figuring out the spell, it kinda slipped my mind.” He looked guilty.

“And Clodius just killed our only chance at answers,” Lucien said, with annoyance in his voice.

“Yes,” Aeon responded, looking defeated. “I left him to eat and rest yesterday, hoping to bring you back and he could tell you everything in person.”

“Shit,” Zev groaned, and I could see him looking at the ceiling.

“So, all he did was give us more questions, except that Katarina was in more danger than we had originally thought.” Lucien threw something on the floor walking away from us but came back.

“Did he say why we all needed to be mated?”

Zev asked the question I had been thinking about the most.

“He said we would be the best people to protect her.” Aeon looked between Zev and I, like he expected the former to pitch a fit.

My heart pounded in my ears, my mouth grew dry and every cell in my body hated mating Zev because I had to. We stared at each other, and I knew he was going to say yes.

“Wait, what if we were falling into a trap?” Lucien asked.

“I don’t think so.” Aeon said confidently. “He didn’t seem like he was lying and why would Clodius kill him?”

“But he isn’t wrong, the more people who protect Katarina, the better.” Zev continued to look at me.

“Aren’t you already protecting her? I mean you do that without a bond, so why would he talk about the bond unless he knew something we didn’t, like an ulterior motive to have us all bonded together.” Lucien was right and I was glad he was making sense. If we just relied on how Zev was feeling, then I would be mated to him right now.

“Didn’t you want us to mate a few weeks ago? You tied her up and left her for me in front of a fire, naked.” Zev countered.

“Yeah, but don’t you think it’s weird that he said we all have to mate?”

“He assumed we all were mated already,” Aeon said. “It does sound a little suspicious, but what if he knew something like what would happen if we completed the pack bond?”

“Does something happen when we complete the pack bond?” I asked, finally finding my voice.

“We don’t know for sure, but they expected us to grow strong individually and as a whole.” Aeon answered. “But that was just a bunch of assumptions.”

Zev was still staring at me, and I knew if I looked at him, I would give in.

“I think we need to think about this before we make any rash decision,” Lucien said.

“At least for a day or two,” Aeon said, putting his hand on my back to escort me out. “Come on, Kitten, let’s finish the spell so we can get started tomorrow.”

We walked away from Zev, but I couldn’t leave without seeing him one more time and I regretted it immediately. He had his head hanging down, looking defeated before he walked to Clodius’ cell, but as I was about to turn the corner he looked at me and mouthed ‘mine’.
