“This means you are on the right track, Kat. I wasn’t supposed to…” She coughed again, her eyes shutting in pain. “I love you, Kat…” She coughed again, her grip was getting weaker. “Be happy and not everything is what it seems, our father…”

She gasped for air, tightening her grip on my hand. Someone came right behind me, holding me.

Her eyes lost focus.

One shuddering breath.

She looked at me, gave me a smile.

One gasp.

“Please, stay,” I whispered, bringing her hand up to kiss. “I need you. I can’t do this without you.”

“Stay. Strong,” she whispered.

Her hand became limp. She looked out in the distance and her heart stopped beating.

“Serena,” I shrieked, shaking her. “No, you can’t leave me, we were supposed to grow old together, have babies together. We said we were going to rule the world.”

I knew there was no hope, but it didn’t stop me from checking her body, like I could fix something or bring her back.

“Serena!” I screamed, leaning over her body holding onto her. Sobs wracked my body as I screamed for my little sister.

The person behind me held me tighter, but I pushed them away. I didn’t want their comfort; I wanted my sister back. She was the rock that kept me sane through all the years, defending me against bullies and Caston when she could.

I cried over her as I felt the last bits of warmth leave her body, until I was just hiccupping, feeling empty.

“Fuck!”

The shout made me look at Aeon and Lucien behind the mess of bodies.

“Katarina,” Zev’s voice made me glance at him, seeing him dirty with blood smeared on his face and body.

Seeing him broke the dam again as I launched myself at him. He welcomed me in his big arms offering me comfort and safety. He didn’t say anything, and I loved him for that. I didn’t want reassurance, I just wanted to feel safe and cry until my heart needed to.

“I’ll take her to a cool place until she's ready.” Mr. Potter’s voice was gentle.

“It's getting late,” Zev said. “We need to take you to the bedroom.”

He stood up, taking me with him. I didn’t want to leave Serena, but I knew if she was left here one of the guys might do something to her by accident. I looked over his shoulder as we crossed Aeon and Lucien. That's when I noticed they were so upset. Our circles had been ruined.

“No!” I yelled, pushing away from Zev. “No!!!”

I screamed, frantic to see if I could go and salvage the magic, but it was pointless. We might have lost our one shot at getting out of here.

“Kitten.”The soft whisper came up from behind me.

I was lost in grief, floating in an ocean of sadness. Time wasn’t relevant, only that the constant ache of my heart was present. I didn’t know what day it was, if it had even been a day, but all I knew was that it felt like forever since my sister had left me.

“Kitten, I need your help,” Aeon said, wrapping an arm around me. “I know it's the last thing you want to do, but we need to restart one of the circles. Your sister brought us so many things and we need to get started on a new spell.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?”

I pushed Aeon away from me.

“My sister just fucking died, and you can’t give me time to grieve!?”

I sat up, turning around to look at him, ready to lash out more as I noticed his fallen expression. He looked rough, with bags under his eyes, and several places on his body that looked red and angry. I had forgotten he had been hit too.
