“Definitely a girl,” he said, without hesitation, kneeling in front of me. “With dark hair and violet eyes, looking exactly like you.”

He lifted my shirt, kissed my stomach saying hello before he rested his ear against it. The moment caught me by surprise, melting my fucking heart even more. Why can’t he still be an asshole, it made it easier not to love him when he was being a dick.

“I thought you said you would never get on your knees.” I ran my fingers through his hair, trying to sear this moment in my memory.

“I was an idiot back then; I didn’t realize kneeling doesn’t make me weak.” He looked at me as I cupped his face. “Kneeling for you is an honor, a fucking privilege. I would lay my life on the line if it meant I got to kneel for you and our children every day for the rest of our lives.”

“Zev…” I whispered because this felt like a declaration of love.

“Have you eaten, Katarina?”

Lucien's voice from the bedroom broke our moment. Zev got up before he came into the bathroom. I turned around, letting my hair down as he entered the bathroom.

“Mr. Potter brought something up for me already,” I said, taking the tangles out of my hair.

“Do you need anything?” He walked up to me, taking the brush out of my hands to brush my hair as Zev left the bathroom.

My heart ached for him and if this worked, I hoped we found our peace together. While we were like oil and water most days, but some days we meshed well like tequilas and lime.

“I don’t think so, I just have to throw some clothes on.” I tried to keep my voice even. Even though I was freaking out, they didn’t need to know. “Can you braid my hair?”

I glanced over my shoulder to see him smiling.

“Of course.” He led me to the bed so I could sit down while he weaved my hair into a complex plait.

If we did have a girl, she would always look her best with Lucien doing her hair. My heart threatened to burst when all I could picture was Lucien sitting on the floor with our child braiding her hair.

Dammit, I told myself I wasn’t going to cry, but everything was just getting overwhelming and my anxiousness made me want to tell Lucien everything.

“I know this year has been rough for you, being left here clueless about everything, but I thank the Goddess she led you here.” He stood up behind me, walking around me to look at me. “I wish I hadn’t wasted those first few months hating you. We could have had more time.”

“Lucien…”

“No, wait. Let me just say this.” He sat down cupping my face. “Thank you, for giving me the best eight months of my life and if today is my last day with you, I don’t regret a single thing. I love you, Katarina Belladonna. I’ll love you till your last breath and mine.”

Tears fell down my face like rivers.

“Baby,” I hiccuped, launching myself at him. “I love you so much. I should be thanking you. You accepted me when no one else did. You saw me before I even saw myself. You fought against your pack for me and you’ve always made me feel loved without using it against me. If I leave you today, please don’t follow me. Live, Lucien. Live for me, baby.”

He held me tighter as we cried. At least I think he was crying, or I was doing enough for the both of us. We pulled apart, kissingeach other frantically, and if we hadn’t been in a time crunch, I would have pushed him onto the bed to ride him to nirvana.

“Here, hold this,” I said, giving him a vial of Oria.

“What’s this?” He looked at it curiously.

“It’s my Hail Mary pass, if everything else goes south.” I closed his hand around it.

“What is Oria?” He asked.

“It heals you. It’s said that it comes from the hair of a girl, and they synthesize it to make this. It can bring you back from the brink of death.” I said, hoping if he had to use it, that it did just that.

“A girl? That’s strange,” he said, looking at the vial.

“That’s what they say, who knows if there is any merit to that,” I said, taking a deep breath to calm my nerves. “If I die, give this to me. I don’t know if it will work but it's worth a try.”

“Of course,” he said, looking into my eyes like he was trying to mesmerize me.

“I love you,” I whispered, resting my forehead against his.
