“Lyric found me when I was thirteen. She came to a summer program I was in at the time. She was only fifteen, but she hacked into the system and unsealed hers and Ainsley’s records.”

“Are they Mac’s too?”

I shake my head as I pinch my lips. “No. Their father was another man. They call him Duncan.” I watch as he slowly straightens from his relaxed pose to standing over me. His body is tight and taunt. I look up at him. “Dima?”

“Kukla, I need you to think really hard.” He squats down in front of me and takes my chin in his hand. “Jimmy Duncan?” he asks.

“Yeah, that’s his name.” I smile at him. “You know him? Could you help them? They can’t find him.”

He pauses for a moment and leans into me, sliding his hands into my messed-up hair. I reach up and pull the clip so it will fall down.

“You are so fucking beautiful, kukla. Mine. There will be things with my business that I can’t tell you, but I need to know a few other things before you continue.”

It hurts that he won’t answer my question, but I understand that he’s not telling me for my protection.

“What do you need to know, Dima?” I tilt my head into his hand.

“You said that Lyric hacked into her records. Is she a hacker?”

“Yes,” I whisper.

He drops to his knees and pushes into my body. “Do you know if Duncan asked her to hack into the Lucky Dice?”

I bite my lip because this right here is the something I can’t tell him. Just like he can’t tell me business things, I can’t tell him this. I decide to go with a half-truth because I don’t know completely if it was that casino, but I know he asked her to hack a casino. He was pissed at the owner. She told me the owner stole it from her father.

“I don’t know. I’ve never met him.”

“Kukla.” He holds my cheek. “I can’t protect you if you don’t tell me the truth completely.”

Again, I bite my lip. “You said that you can’t tell me everything when it comes to business, and I can’t tell you everything when it comes to my sisters. I have to protect them.”

He curses in Russian and stands up. He starts pacing, and I’m scared that he’s now going to push me away. I wanted to tell him about my sisters, not expecting him to question me about them right away.

I can’t stop the tears as they fall, and I decide that I have to leave before he kicks me out. My heart clenches because this isn’t going to be my home now.

He pulls out his phone and dials a number. He starts talking, and I don’t listen because my heart is breaking.

I’m in love with Dmitri. Shit. I’m really in love with him. This is worse than when I first ran away from him. I slip off the chair and pick up my heels. I watch as Dima doesn’t even notice me. He moves into the bedroom area and continues talking to whomever is on the phone.

“I won’t let that happen. I’ll do whatever I need to,” he barks into the phone and doesn’t see me as I stand in the hallway and take one last look at him.

My sisters are family. I have to protect them. Just like I thought I was protecting Sparrow, now I’m doing it for Lyric and Ainsley.

I turn away before he sees the tears rolling down my face. I make my way out to the great room, and I reach the entertainment room when the sob breaks from my chest. I bend over and curl my body into itself. I have to hold it together until I can get somewhere safe. I’ll have to hide where Dmitri won’t find me. I slip my heels on and walk through the entryway to the door past the mirrored foyer.

“Where are you going, Lennon?” he barks, and I keep my back to him. The tears are rolling down my cheeks.

“I thought you’d want me to leave. I can’t tell you what you want me to. I didn’t want you to throw me out, so I’m going out on my own. I’ll get a rideshare to pick me up.”

“You are not leaving me.” He’s on me instantly, his body wrapping around mine, holding me to him. “It’s my job to protect you. I’m your Master.”

“Yes.” I lean back into his body. I give him it all. “Please.”

He turns me and sees the tears.

“Kukla, will you give that? Will you allow me to take control?”

I only think for a moment. Everything is overwhelming me. Ainsley is mad that I don’t have money to give her. She’s telling me it’s my fault her plan isn’t going to work. Lyric keeps sending me messages saying I need to be protected and to ignore Ainsley. I just don’t know what to do. And then there is my father and the board of directors for my brainchild. The shelter I conceptualized that he wants to take away from me.
