“You were already taking me to your home.”

He shakes his head as he shrugs, and a smirk pulls up his lips. “It’s my job to protect you, but I’m taking you to our home.”

I shake my head, confused by his words.

“Our house?”

I look out the window as we go through the gate to the community Andrei’s house is in. The car continues along the road as if heading to where I’ve been before. Then it turns into the driveway to the house across the street from where Sparrow and Andrei live.

“Right here? I’ll be close to Sparrow?”

He smiles as he opens his door. When he comes around to open my door, I take his hand and let him pull me out of the car. I look across the street and my heart flutters. This is more than I could have imagined. I expected us to live with Andrei because it’s Dima’s job to protect him. But we’ll have our own place and he’ll still be close.

Just like Andrei and Sparrow’s house, ours has a gate at the end of the driveway. There are already guards posted around the property. I snuggle into his chest and hug him close.

“Thank you.” I sigh deeply. “I feel so safe now. I was scared thinking about going back there without you and only the security there. With everything going on, I know I have to trust you to protect me.”

His body tightens as I’m talking. “We’ll discuss what other things, but you told me you’d talk to me.”

He leads me over to the walkway, and we climb the long, flat low stairs up to another gate. He opens it with his thumbprint, and we enter a small porch-garden area. There’s a small bench and a couple of plants. At the next large door, he takes my hand and presses my thumb to the sensor. The locks disengage and he opens the door. Lights are on, making the whole area bright and welcoming in the darkness of the night.

He points to our right. “There are two bedrooms with their own bathrooms and then a guest bath and storage closet over there. You can see them tomorrow.” He continues moving forward. There is a large glassed-in room to our left and a wet bar on our right. I see a TV in the room and furniture along with bean bag seats. “The kids can watch TV without disturbing you, and you can see them.”

I smile at him saying we are going to have kids. It settles something in my heart. Past that is a huge great room with a fireplace and the kitchen right there. The kitchen has a long counter and state-of-the-art appliances. I can’t wait to cook in there. Through the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, I see a patio with furniture, heat lamps, an outdoor fireplace, and lawn.

“I thought we could use Andrei and Sparrow’s pool so we didn’t need our own. Plus, I’d have to gate it to protect the kids.”

I squeeze his hand, hoping he knows how much I appreciate those thoughts.

“Over there is another bedroom with its own bathroom too.” He points to the left of the patio doors. “Behind us is the laundry room and entrance from the garage and a pantry.” He again points them out. “But this is where we are going.” He leads me past the living room, through a hallway, and turns right, stopping at a set of double doors. “Our room.” He opens the doors.

I step through onto the plush cream carpet. “I liked how dark your room was.” I tease him, and he moves behind me to wrap his arms around me, resting his chin on my shoulder.

“I thought you’d like the brightness of here. I had the decorator only put in a few things. You can change anything you want.”

I take in the small sitting room with another fireplace. The large wood bed that looks similar to the one he has at Andrei’s. This one is sand colored instead of black. The blankets are a pale blue. The stool at the end of the bed is also a sand color with blue accents. The long curtains cover the floor-to-ceiling windows and match everything else in the room. The whole room is inviting.

I turn and see the large Saint Andrew’s cross against the wall. There are doors tucked in so you can hide it.

“I love it. Thank you.” I turn and jump into his arms.

He kisses me deep, his hands flexing against my bare ass as he pulls me up his body tighter. One finger breaches my folds and I moan.

“I want to take you again, but first we are going to talk.” He carries me over to the sitting area and sits me in a chair before he turns back and flips a switch. The fireplace lights up, and I smile as I slip off my heels and tuck my feet into the seat with me.

He sits down in the other chair. “Want a drink?” He looks at the small bar cart next to him. I see the bottle of wine chilling in the bucket and nod. He knows me so well and what I like.

Without letting him get up, I move to the cart and pour him a vodka before I pour myself a glass of wine.

“Thank you, moya kukla.” His voice is so gruff with his emotion.

I know he wants to just shackle me to that cross and give me the desire he wants, but he also wants to know more about me.

I take a fortifying sip of wine before I set it on the table. I want to curl my legs into the chair again, but crossing them and my dress won’t allow that. I can’t stall any longer.

“My mother had twin babies a few years before I was born. She gave them up. Didn’t even attempt to raise them, just left them at the hospital.” I hold in the tears because it hurts when I think about my mom doing that to them. “She was a good mom at times, but other times she wasn’t. I hate her for what she did, and if she had been alive when they found me, I would have confronted her. Asked her why she chose me and not them. Why she even had me.”

Dmitri reaches out and takes my hand. “Don’t question your existence. You are important to me.” I smile softly at his words.
