Something has to change. But not right now.

I turn up the radio, let the pounding speakers drown out my thoughts.

Tomorrow will be different. Somehow.

“I’m taking point here, cover my six.”

“Roger that.”

You would think by how we talk we are in an actual war zone. Instead, it’s just our weekly Call of Duty play session.

I navigate my avatar, a guy clad in army fatigues and wielding an assault rifle, out from behind the crumbled wall I’ve been taking cover behind and run fast through a hail of bullets. “Shit, shit, shit!”

“Red, you good?”

“No, there’s – fuck! There’s a whole battalion out here, I think I’m –”

The screen gets fuzzy as blood spatter seeps into the corners. I throw my controller down. “I’m done for the night.”

“Don’t give up, Red! It’s a hard campaign.”

I smile at the sound of Violet’s, voice. We met playing Fortnite a few years ago and quickly evolved from fast online friends to best friends. We have slowly built up our ranks of people we’ve played with over the years, and now, we have a little squad going. “Thanks, Vie, but I’ve got the first day tomorrow. Need to start getting ready for bed.”

My whole crew excitedly congratulates me and gases me up through my earpiece.

“It’s going to be great!”

“Don’t be nervous, you’ll be good.”

“Worst comes to worst, just remember, it will all be over by this time tomorrow.”

I laugh and say my goodbyes before logging off and disconnecting from the chat. The silence that surrounds me when I take off my headphones is a strange feeling I’ve never gotten over. I always need to look over my shoulders to see if anyone has snuck up on me while I was playing.

Doesn’t matter how many locks are on the doors or the fact I’ve installed a security system. You can never be too careful.

Tomorrow is a big day. It’s the first day of my brand-new job. Not only that, but it’s my first job in cyber security. I feel like I’m a baby taking their first steps. I’ve been working in the computer field for several years now, but I was in the gaming industry, working on the coding and programming behind the scenes. The gaming industry, however, is super toxic for women and I just didn’t find a company that made me feel safe.

So, I went back to school, finished up a masters in cyber security and got every certificate I possibly could so I could finally find my dream job.

Forty-five job applications, six interviews, and one contract signed later, I’ve got my job.

There is a teeny tiny problem, though.

My new job is at Hawthorn LTD.

And my boss is my ex-boyfriend’s best friend. Oliver Hawthorn.

I knew what I was getting into when I applied for the job, but I applied on a whim. I never thought in a million years I’d get a follow-up. I thought my name would cross Oliver’s desk andboommy resume would be in the trash.

So, when I got the call, I had to keep myself from jumping up and down. Working at Hawthorn is a dream come true. Not to mention I’ll be part of a new team that’s working on curbing data breach attempts. I’ll be getting to utilize my certificate in Briarware, the most advanced programming for ethical hacking to date, and that is scratching the tech itch I’ve always had since I was little.

However, based on the interview process and everything since, I don’t think Oliver even knows I’m working for him. I’ve met with everyone under the sun including HR, except Oliver. Plus, all of it was done virtually so there was no possibility that I would run into him at the Hawthorn office.

Tomorrow, though, that all changes.
