Even if Orlie doesn’t think the baby inside me is a Wynters at all.

ORLIE

“She’s running me ragged, man,”Hunter says with a heavy sigh.

Axel chuckles. “You’re not going to hear me complaining.”

I shouldn’t have agreed to going out, much less with two members of the Solace family, but when Hunter reached out, I couldn’t say no. For one, I want to keep up appearances that nothing is wrong. And for another, well, I thought I might be able to get a little intel.

I’m having doubts. They don’t feel legitimate, considering the simplest explanation is usually the right one. And between my vasectomy, a scientific medical procedure, not working, and Kira sleeping around, the latter seems way more plausible.

Still, though. I have to wonder.

“I’m not complaining, I’m just…old.” Hunter takes a swig of his beer.

“You’re telling me those rickety bones can’t handle a younger woman’s libido?” Axel asks.

With a grimace, Hutner rolls his eyes. “I was saying ‘old’ in jest.”

I close my eyes. “How would your wives feel if they knew you were talking about this?”

“As if they’re not constantly discussing their scheme to become pregnant at the same time!” Axel says. “We’re allowed to talk just as much as they are.”

I smile to myself. I’m glad to have male friends so open with what’s going on. Growing up, everything felt so shallow.

Now, I’m not saying I enjoy hearing about their exploits of trying for children, especially when I’m in my own predicament, but it sets a good precedent, I think.

“I mean, you didn’t have to agree to the scheme,” I say.

They both smile sheepishly.

“Unless you also enjoy the scheme,” I add.

Hunter holds his hands up. “Look, it’s a really nice idea that our kids could be growing up at the same time.”

“Yeah, it’s like built-in best friends.”

“Cousins,” Hunter adds.

Axel laughs. “I forgot about that. We’re related now. Still sinking in.”

The way they banter back and forth about the little fantasy of their children growing up together tells me everything I need to know. This is just as much for them as it is for Amy and Gillian.

“And I have to say, I’m eager to do the whole thing, you know?” Axel says. “I missed out on Stella from the beginning. I’ve got a lot to make up for.”

Hunter claps his hand on Axel’s back. “You already have.”

The younger man shakes his head. “It will never feel like it.”

“I never knew trying for a baby was so…complicated,” I remark. Not that I’ve ever tried for one before. Or could try in the future.

Hunter laughs loudly. “Sex right now is like a job. And I’m not saying I don’t want it, but when I feel her tap me first thing in the morning, I’m like –”

“Oh, that’s the worst. Let mesleep.”

I laugh. Sounds like they’re getting a taste of their own medicine. Of course, from what it sounds like, it will be worth it in the long run, both of them trying for children with the women they love.
