I gulp.

“The only respite I really get is when Amy is at Kent’s and trying to talk to Kira.”

Don’t panic. Don’t…panic…

“Is she still on her speaking strike?” Axel asks.

Hunter shakes his head. “It’s never been a strike, it’s just…” He glances at me. “You might know something, Orlie. Right?”

“W-why would I know anything?”

Shrugging, Hunter replies, “She’s been working from home. Surely that must have been cleared with HR or something.”

Few. “Well, that’s confidential, but…our employees are allowed to do what makes them feel most productive. And if that’s what Kira feels –”

“Has nothing to do with that, I assure you.” Hunter finishes off the last of his beer. “Something is going on. And Kira’s not usually so…”

“Complicated?” Axel offers.

“Right! Exactly.”

I frown. “How do you mean?”

“Well, look, Kira isn’t a big talker, right? But when she talks, it means something. Because of that, it’s usually pretty easy to get a read on her,” Hunter says.

Axel picks up quickly. “She keeps things as simple as possible for everyone’s sake.”

If only they knew…“Come on, Kira must have some skeletons in her closet. Her own secrets.”

Axel and Hunter exchange a look before Axel goes on, “I mean, sure. Who doesn’t? What I mean is…Kira is the definitionof a middle child. She doesn’t get in anyone’s way and she tries to make things as easy as possible in every direction.”

“So, she likes to make things complicated elsewhere, huh?” I lament being the unfortunate recipient of her complicating things.

“I mean, we don’t know how she is at work, but I highly doubt it,” Hunter says.

I suck my lower lip into my mouth. This isn’t going the way I want. I want them to give me as much ammunition as possible to keep believing Kira is a dishonest person who would go as far as to try and make me question my own vasectomy.

“I mean, is that your experience?” Axel asks.

I clam up. It hasn’t been. Not in the time I’ve known her. Not until…I complicated it. Sure, it takes two to tango, but not many people have a boss who crosses a major line.

I made things complicated for her.

“No, it’s not,” I say softly and then swig my beer.

The rest of my night out with Axel and Hunter, I remain rather quiet as I follow the thread of Kira over and over again.

Something isn’t adding up. And I have to do my due diligence.

The second I’m in my car, I call my doctor.

My doctor,Dr. McDib, is an elderly man with a frizzing crow’s nest of hair. He’s been our family doctor for many years. Whenever you ask him a question, his eyes grow to what seems to be an impossible width before he nods thoughtfully and considers.

He’s considering way too long given the question I’ve just asked.

“Well, Orlando, a vasectomy reversing on its own is extremely unlikely. Under a single percentage point.” He twists his lips to the side. “But it’s not impossible.”

My jaw tightens. “So, you’re saying…”
