One thing I plan to do is never go to an afterparty. From this moment forward, my after-game celebration will consist of talking with Leslie, sharing laughter with Leslie, and taking her body until sunrise. She’s all I want and need. Had I come home, maybe I would have gotten a clue and remembered it was our relationship anniversary.

We have always celebrated January 28th,the anniversary of our first year together. On our first anniversary, I initially forgot, but by the end of the day, I’d made up for it by taking her to a bed and breakfast on the outskirts of town.

I know how I missed it this year. Usually, the football season would be over by now, but we started a month late due to a national health scare. Now, everything has been pushed back, including the date for the Super Bowl, making our anniversary and the peak of the football season run together.

I hear the smile in her voice when she says, “I’ll hold you to that.”

“Please do, baby. Hold me accountable. Make me better for you.”There is no doubt that this woman has my heart, and I want to be my best for her.

“Wayne, you know what I want.”

“For me to not forget our anniversary. Done. It’ll never happen again. Happy belated anniversary, baby,” I say, fully aware remembering our anniversary isn’t all she wants.

“Yeah, happy belated anniversary to you too.” There’s a slight tremble in her voice, which tugs at my heartstrings.

I only want to make Leslie happy. I never want to bring her down or make her sad. “So, what did we do?” I ask, hoping to make her smile.

“We?”

“Yeah, after you left me. What did we go and do?”

She laughs. “Well,Iwent to lunch and shopping with Jasmine.Youwent to camp.”

“So, you spent the rest of the day with Jasmine instead of staying home to talk to me?”

“I did. And you know why.”

As much as I want to say something about her leaving home and not coming back until I was gone, I don’t argue that point. Instead, I ask, “What are you doing today? I’ve been calling you.”

“I’m at the stadium waiting for Jasmine now.” She goes on to tell me about Jasmine’s tryouts.

“That’s big news. Did you know she was planning to try out?”

“She didn’t say anything until after she was chosen. It was a complete surprise that she was picked, but it’s not surprisingthat she wants to cheer since she did it in high school and college. This is just the next level for her.”

“That’s amazing news, baby. Tell Jasmine that she’ll make a great cheerleader for the Saints. Want me to put in a good word for her?”

“I’ll ask her, but I’m sure she wants to get it on her own.”

“I can respect that.”

She perks up, and there’s a ring in her voice when she says, “Oh, how could I forget the reason I called! You’ll never guess what happened a few minutes ago!”

Whatever she’s about to say means a lot to her. Her happiness spills through the phone and onto me and makes me smile. “What happened, baby?”

“I got a contract offer to take pictures for the Saints!” she squeals.

“Really?” My body tenses as confusion sets in. “How did that happen?”

She lets out a breath. “Okay, you’re not going to believe this! So, I was taking pictures of Jasmine and other random shots around the stadium, and Keith Langley walked over to me and asked to see my pictures.”

“My boss, Keith?” I clarify.

“Yes!”

He isn’t exactly a man to start a conversation with random people, so I wonder what made him approach my woman.

“So, he just walked up to you and asked to see your pictures?”I probe.
