As far as I could tell there were distinct color differences between the two courts and it was only a few people, like Van, who it wasn't easy to tell from a distance which court they were from. Moonlit Court fae, like myself, had an almost silver tone to their hair, whereas Sunkissed Court fae had a golden or at the very least warm tone to their hair. The same for the eyes, Moonlit Court members had eyes that varied from white to purple and blue while Sunkissed Court members had eyes that varied from brown to gold and cream.

"Volker!" Wyn called excitedly as she bounded down the last few steps, almost falling on her face as she did so, only to be caught by the fae male. "Sorry," she said as she righted herself. "Still not used to the different height of the stairs here."

It messed with me too, but I was too stubborn to admit something like that in front of a stranger. "Are you okay, Wyn?"

She glanced at me over her shoulder, clearly still hanging on to Volker. "Fine, fine. You know me, clumsy as always. A few bumps and bruises won't stop me." She finally released her hold on the fae and smiled as she continued, "Volker this is Senara. Sen this is Volker."

Volker stepped past Wyn and bowed deeply with a flourish of his hand that brought forth a glowing shape out of the ether that resembled a rose. It dispersed almost as soon as I'd recognized it for what it was. "It's a pleasure, my lady."

I nodded and dipped into something resembling a curtsey. "Nice to meet you, Volker."

He straightened and I was relieved to find a distinct lack of interest in his face. Not that I expected every male fae to be interested in me, but there was something that always seemed to bring out the darkness in people when they were around me,and the last thing I wanted was a repeat of what happened with Tower.

"Volks had invited me to do some training today. Would you like to join us?" Wyn asked, and I honestly couldn't tell which she would prefer in that moment. Did she want me there or would she prefer some alone time with this fae. He was handsome, there was no denying that, and in his black robes he looked even more startling with his pale hair and skin in contrast to the dark material. It made me realize that Wyn was in all black too, which was unusual to say the least. She generally avoided anything that might make her hair stand out, and the rich black material certainly set it off.

"Gwyneira, it may be dangerous to have someone else there. This is an experiment after all." His tone was soft, but filled with concern.

Wyn grinned mischievously at him. "That's exactly why I want her there. This is for her too, you know."

Suddenly it dawned on me what the experiment was going to be. She was going to try to make herself bigger. Looking at her next to the fae man she was friends with I could understand why she'd be so desperate to use magic to improve herself.

Wyn looked almost child-like in comparison. It wasn't just that she was short, but as we walked through the halls, it was the stares, the whispers that followed us. I had only been out of my glass prison for a day or so and this was definitely the first time I'd really been wandering around, with the exception of trying to find the training room, so it was the first time I was really seeing people's genuine reaction to us.

If Wyn had been dealing with this since she arrived, I could see why she'd be trying to find a way for it to stop. The two of us had always lived our lives trying to be as hidden and unobtrusive as possible in the hopes of not being found out and losing our lives as punishment for something we had no control over.

I followed the two of them through the College of Mages grounds and into an old building that looked like a library, but one that was more a store room than an actual library. The shelves and books were covered in dust and I could tell from the slight gasp that Wyn let out they hadn't been here before. If they had there was no way she would have been able to leave it this dirty.

"I've set everything up already," Volker said quietly.

Wyn walked over to a large circle that had been drawn on the ground. Within it there were different symbols, none of which I understood, along with what had to be some kind of language. I didn't understand any of it, but I couldn't take my eyes off my best friend.

She had lit up in a way I'd never seen before. Not only did she look excited but she looked confident as well. This was what she was meant to be doing and what she'd wanted to be doing her whole life. In some ways I was beyond thankful to Thorn since now she was getting to live her dream.

Wyn was quietly going over a scroll that had been laid out next to a few books when Volker came over to me. "She's quite talented, your Gwyneira. The things she's picked up since she arrived have taken lesser mages decades to accomplish." True admiration rang in his voice as he watched her with me from the other side of the room.

"She's always been a fast learner and she's always had a special relationship with magic to boot, one I've never understood and, to be honest, always scared me since it could have ended her life if she was ever discovered." I snapped my mouth shut. Going on about our past lives when Wyn was so happy wasn't something I wanted to do. She wasn't living in the past so I didn't want to drag her back there.

"She told me a little of your lives prior to coming to the fae lands. It sounded hard, so I'm glad you both are somewherewhere you'll be celebrated. It does confuse me that you have no relationship with magic though. You have the mark, one of the biggest ever recorded at that. By rights your magic should be overflowing." His hair was brushed back away from his face and wound into a bun at the back of his head. A few wisps had come loose though and he tucked them behind his ears.

I shrugged. "I've never been able to do anything magical. The only thing I was ever good at was fighting and even then I couldn't beat someone like Thorn or Ronan."

"Are those your friends from the Sunkissed Court?"

I nodded.

"Did they try and help you find your magic at all?"

I gave him some side-eye. "They are warriors, using magic isn't something at the forefront of their minds."

"All fae use magic in some way or another." I thought about Ronan seeming to summon the bread when we were at Sanctuary. "If you would like, I can try and help you find your magic."

There was nothing in his tone that made me think he was trying to get on my good side, or make me owe him a debt, but that's what I was used to so instead of agreeing like I was sure most normal people would, I asked, "What would that involve?"

"I could send some magic into you to try and see if there's a blockage of some kind." Something on my face must have given away my trepidation. "I wouldn't need to touch you or anything like that, and you wouldn't feel anything, plus, my magic would dissipate within an hour or so, but I completely understand if you'd rather not."

"Volks! I don't understand this bit!" Wyn called out, turning to find her mage friend. She smiled when she saw the two of us together. Other women may have considered me a threat but not Wyn. She knew I'd never take what was hers or something that brought her happiness, which Volker definitely did.

He hurried over to her, his black robes billowing behind him as he strode across the room. The two of them looked good together, bent over scrolls and old books, their arms brushing up against one another as they pointed out different things while he explained and she questioned.
