I glanced at Volker who just gave me a bland smile. If I knew him better I might have been able to guess at the thoughts he was hiding, but I didn't, and the last thing I wanted was for Wyn to think I doubted her so I stepped into the magic circle as she stepped out.

"This will be over in a flash, just you wait." She hummed for a moment before the chant hit my ears a moment later, I couldn't even see her moving her lips though. It was like everythingoutside the circle had frozen and I was in here like a fish in a bowl. I just hoped her words were true and that this would be over before anything terrible could happen.

Chapter

Twenty-Two

Senara

I couldn't remember what had happened. Well, I could, but only to a point. Wyn had been doing magic, she'd made herself bigger, closer to fae size, and then she'd done the same to me.

Or had she?

The last thing I truly remembered was walking into the magic circle and Wyn starting to chant. I had woken up like this for the last few days in a row. Remembering and not remembering.

Apparently, the magic had gone wild and nearly killed both Wyn and I. It was a little late to figure it out, but using that spell on two people, one after the other, was too much for her magic to handle. We had both almost lost our lives as payment for the mistake.

Ever since Wyn hadn't been able to forgive herself. If I could remember what happened I'd be better able to explain that I knew it wasn't her fault, but every time I tried she just started crying and saying I didn't understand.

We had both spent an entire day being worked on by the healers, which was unusual according to them. I had felt betterat first, but recently I'd been feeling more and more exhausted, as though I was being stretched too thin.

The day before I had even tried to train with some of the guards, but it took more out of me than I had thought and so far I'd yet to be able to make it out of bed today.

A knock at my door was the motivation I finally needed. I wrapped the robe that had come with the room around my shoulders, surprised at how well it fit now, because, yes, Wyn's magic, even though it had nearly killed us, had been successful.

"Who is it?" I called, my voice scratchy even to my own ears.

"Your beloved sister."

I opened the door and not only was it Wyn, but it was Van as well. The surprise had me pulling my robe tighter around me.

"I found a friend. He wanted to check in on you after hearing what happened," Wyn said by way of explanation.

I opened the door wider and the two of them came in. "You heard what happened?" I asked, hoping that it was a fluke and that the whole court didn't know.

"It's all everyone is talking about. The fae who wasn't a fae, who tried to be a better fae so she could serve her people and fulfill her destiny of wielding the moon blades and driving the blight from our lands. The fae who almost lost her life in the process." There was a slight reprimand in the last part, though we didn't know each other well enough for it to be a full scolding, I got his point and nodded.

"Lovely. More rumors and gossip about me. Just what I needed." I closed the door behind the two of them and pulled on the velvet rope that hung by the fireplace. It summoned a serving woman, which I hated, but if the rumors really were circulating then I didn't want to go down to the dining area anyway. Sure, we could go into town away from the court proper, but that sounded like so much work that I was drained just thinking about it.

"At least they are good ones this time," Van shrugged as he sat next to Wyn at the small table by the window. It was apparently for just such an occasion as this, except for the fact that it only had two chairs, which meant I was out of luck.

"How are you feeling?" Wyn asked, trying to move away from the subject that was obviously irritating me.

The knock at the door had me pausing before I answered. The serving woman came in and stood, awaiting orders, which made me more than a little uncomfortable. "Could we get some tea for me and my friends please? Maybe some food too? Whatever is easiest, we're not picky."

She curtseyed at me and disappeared back through the door. "Silent as a ghost, that one," I murmured, mainly to myself.

"It's not uncommon for serving staff to have their tongues cut out so they can't spill secrets. According to the nobles it helps keep them loyal, since they can't sell their knowledge, or at least not as easily since none of them know how to read and write either," Van added, making my heart ache for the poor woman.

"That's horrific," Wyn gasped, putting a hand to her heart. "I had no idea that the nobles were so awful."

Van made a show of looking around the room. "Only when they choose to be. They are taking care of your friend after all."

"That's only because I'm worth something to them, because they have expectations of me. If I can't fulfill them then I make them look bad and no noble, especially royalty, wants to look bad in front of their people," I countered. My exhaustion hit me again in a wave and I plopped down on the edge of my bed.

Wyn was immediately up, concern creasing her brow. "Are you okay, Sen?"

"Just tired is all. I'll be fine once I've eaten." I waved her away.
